What would be a reasonable expectation for a return from the Mets?

    Nothing.

A small salary dump offset and a mildly interesting 18 year old or two or a not so interesting 22 year old or two.

Considering the Cubs will eat almost zero salary? I'd guess some very low level lottery ticket.

Maybe Alexander Ramirez. Outside of the top-10 Mets prospects. 18 year old kid who got $2m signing bonus in 2019. Fits the age the Cubs are targeting. He plays CF and should stick. Tall frame. Sounds like a Cubs target.

But could be too good. Might be someone lower like 2 versions of Jordany Ventura. 18 year old arms with weak frames who project as back end of a rotation lottery tickets. Joander Sanchez is another.

I would like to see us target outfielders and pitching. We have enough MIF and catchers. Some of those SS prospects will be able to change positions once we see who fits where the best down the road. I would hope we would be willing to eat some money on KB to get a guy we like if we had too. If we have a guy we like, and the Mets want us to give them Bryant and eat 6-7 mil, we should absolutely be willing to do that.

We should be willing but probably won't be. They couldn't give Jon Lester $3m. They will dump every penny they can right now.

If they're getting lottery tickets, it probably won't matter what position they are. Pick the best tool you can out of your choices and go from there. Whatever position is secondary at that point. Find something you can turn into an asset.

If they need to still drop money, they'll probably drop between $80m and $100m from last year.
I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't sign any FA over a million dollars. I wouldn't be surprised if the last SP spot, LF, and the rest of the bullpen were all minor league deals competing in ST.
