Total freaking shocker man. This is insane. Len was so good. Cubs baseball next year will feel so weird. As if the direction we are heading as a team wasn’t bad enough, now we lose the voice of Cubs baseball that we’ve all learned to love over the last 16 years.

Sharma from the Athletic says its Len wanting to do radio. I'm inclined to buy it because I trust Sharma but I have a sneaky belief this is Marquee more than it is Len, still.

Talk about a punch straight to the gut... We lose Theo, Schwarber, and now Len, and probably Kris Bryant all in one offseason. What the **** dude....

Relarively speaking, if they're going to go under $175m they might as well go as low as they want. There isn't going to be a big difference between a Cubs team at $170m and $140m if they're cutting this much salary. They'll just be really bad, or normal bad.

Which isn't to say you cannot have a winning team below $170m. Its to say with the roster the Cubs currently have, I don't see any way they can put a team under $170m or so and have a winning combo.

Problem is they're almost certainly not going to do a full rebuild (there's just too many guys to trade and it's not a seller's market) so they are probably looking at a 1-year low-salary regrouping of the team and payroll.

So they'll probably go as low as they can with the guys they're basically forced to keep, including any out of Baez/Bryant/Rizzo they aren't able to trade. Virtually certain Darvish, Heyward, Hendricks etc aren't going anywhere. I expect them to compete in 2022.

IMO they probably put a .500 team on the field in 2021 and try their best with whatever value guys they find.
