Who's has a bigger base? Sanders progressives or Trump conservatives?

Someone who is upset Biden is the Democrat nominee said that if a progressive candidate was the Democratic nominee and they just played to the base, they could beat Trump.

Putting aside that this leaves a huge portion of moderate America in the cold, say that played out, where you had, in a hypothetical world, Bernie Sanders style progressivism vs Trump nationalism in an election where the same Trump tactics of tripling down on his base was applied to a Sanders-like nominee who triples down on that base, who would win in 2020? Discuss.

Trump has a far larger base. In fact, Bernie was counting on his young ardent supporters to show up during this election's primaries and they by and large didn't, giving Biden the win.

what is a base really? people that would vote for Trump, or Biden, no matter what?

I don't think either realistic candidate can only play to their base and expect to win. I think it could be 30ish% for either base that are die hard no matter what, and that would leave 40% either leaning one way or undecided thus far.

Trump has about 40% of the country that will be with him no matter what. I mean no matter what. Sanders based is about 20-25% of the country. Problem is that his based just likes to march, protest and majority of them don't bother showing up to vote. Trump's base will show up no matter what. Trump's problem is that 55%+ of the country doesn't like him. The question is what percentage of that will show up to vote against him.

Most democrats are voting against Trump not because they love Biden. Which is perfectly fine since the point is to get Trump out no matter what. If Biden is elected then in 2024 Dems can nominate someone more to the left than Biden. Republicans will likely continue to nominate far right candidates that will appease the base but turn off the majority of the country.

One managed to win the presidency and the other can't even win the primary for his party (for the purposes of this discussion, I will pretend Bernie is really a Democrat).

Do I really have to say anything further?

Itís just a shame that they arenít able to get them to the polls. If the alleged support for Bernie was as large as everyone pretends it is, he would be president and the Democrats would have a super majority in both chambers.

Trump has his base of whackos but republicans are more tribal than the left. So really his base is most republicans. Again, as long as he pretends to be prolife he has 60 million automatic votes.

Bernieís bade is strong and even includes voters in the rustbelt who voted for Trump over Hillary because they were desperate for change. But moderate Dems just arenít there for him. The donor class of Dems would rather see Trump than Bernie. Itís why they jumped in and funded the hell out of Biden and pushed Bloomberg into the race for what 10 minutes?
