It'll still somehow end up cheaper than Dak's contract. 😂

Holy ****, I hope he pushed for like 50M/season and a ton of guarantees, because if not he's gonna regret not setting the market again in 4 years. I never thought we'd see a 10 year deal in today's NFL.

Who knows how COVID will impact the rate of increase, but there's no way Mahomes is winning this deal unless there's fine print, a percentage of the cap, or its worth like 500M guaranteed.

Iím not in the position to do that math but what was the increase in the cap over 5 years ago?

Dak probably never intended to sign longterm until Mahomes deal was done. But itís more fun for people to say Jerry messed up.

Looks like it jumped from 143M to 198M, so a bit under 40% increase. And it's worth mentioning that the 2020 cap could've been so much more with new TV money and the new CBA, but they were trying to introduce new money slowly to avoid a cap explosion.

Using the cap increase, we can assume Mahomes being worth 38M/season in 2020 would be worth ~53M/season in 2025 and then (if the trend were to continue) 74M/season in 2030. It's impossible to know if the NFL will continue to grow like that, but if it did, Mahomes on 2 5-year deals would make ~560M in 10 years.

Another issue is that the signing bonus can't be pro-rated for more than 5 years, so there's a limit to how big it is. If he got like $250M up front that's a lot of money to invest and he could potentially make a lot of returns on investment, so he might not worry too much about $5M more or less that he will make in 2028 or whenever. But I doubt the signing bonus is much higher than $100. Maybe there will be some more restructuring bonuses built into the contract that act like additional signing bonuses in 2, 3 years or so.

With the cap potentially shrinking next year, Dak definitely wants to play on the tag this year. It means he might become a free agent next year already, because his current cap hit + 20% = $37.7M could be more than the Cowboys can afford. Other QBs with $30M+ cap hits will probably restructure.
