Cleveland Indians announce name is under review

Following the announcement of the NFL's Washington Redskins for the same thing:

    Makes sense.

What about Cleveland Tribe or Natives? Not sure.

Getting rid of "Redskins" definitely makes sense, but I don't see how "Indians" is offensive.

SOme of the same groups pushing the Redskins for a name change have also been pushing the Indians, Chiefs and Blackhawks for the same thing. Not all, but some.

Indians may not be offensive , but it originates in good ol' american ignorance. For the reason I'd be happy with the change.

I'm never really seen any backlash from the native American community over the word "Indian". I understood why many didn't like Chief Wahoo though. All my "Major League" nostalgia aside, it was a dumb caricature. I don't expect them to change the name but they could always go back to being the Cleveland Spiders.

The Redskins is an entirely different issue. That's blatantly pretty racist. People can scream "SJW" and whatever they want to but you wouldn't call a team the "Blackskins" or the "Yellowskins".

Need to get rid of the Braves, Seminoles, Angels, Vikings, Patriots, Cavaliers, Rangers, Cowboys, Devils, Warriors, Celtics, Wizards, Mavericks, Kings, Fighting Irish, Twins, Royals, Pirates, and more.

They could all be considered offensive by certain people.

Then all the teams named after animals. That ish must be changed right now.

    The only acceptable names are Team A, B, C... or Team 1, 2, 3...

I actually don't see how any of those could be considered offensive...none are derogatory, unless Fighting in front of Irish.

Redskins, Indians, and the tomahawk chop oughta do it
    gotta love 'referential' treatment

I don't see how any of them could either. But some Jesus or Satan lovers could be offended by Angels and Devils.
Vikings could find cartoon mascot ragnar offensive to their culture, displaying ragnar as a friendly little wuss.

    So on and so on

Yeah and those are the people that get to decide if they are offensive. Anything that trivializes an identity of a group and the bottom end of a power dynamic should be examined.

Don't forget the Chicago Blackhawks and the Montreal Canadiens.
