2020 Atlanta Braves Regular Season Thread

Opening day has been announced, well, sort of, it will be 23-24 of July. Some things are still up in the air, but there will be universal DH and opening day roster will be a 30-man. So I think is a good time to discuss the roster and lineups.

"Spring" Training 2.0 starts next week so there could be potential changes in the roster because of injury, production or even if a player opt to not participate because of Covid-19. I will show how will my roster looks a of today, assuming health and no opt-out.

    Pitchers:

    Mike Soroka
    Max Fried
    Cole Hamels
    Mike Folty
    Felix Hernandez

    Will Smith
    Darren O'day
    Chris Martin
    Sean Newcomb
    Shane Greene
    Mark Melancon
    Luke Jackon
    AJ Minter
    Kyle Wright
    Touki

    Position players

    Travis D'arnaud
    Freddie Freeman
    Ozzie
    Camargo
    Swanson
    Ozuna
    Inciarte
    Acuña

    Markakis
    Duvall
    Flowers
    Riley
    Adeiny Hechavarria
    Alex Jackson

I'm torn on who get the last spot, Bryse Wilson is a good option, but I want to make room for Charlie Clutch, he's not on the 40 man roster though, but a guy like Grant Dayton is expendable in case the Braves go with Charlie, so he's my pick.

    Lineup vs RHP

    Acuña RF
    Ozzie 2B
    Freeman 1B
    Ozuna LF
    Markakis DH
    D'arnaud C
    Inciarte CF
    Swanson SS
    Camargo 3B

    Lineup vs LHP

    Acuña CF
    Ozzie 2B
    Freeman 1B
    Ozuna DH
    D'arnaud C
    Duvall RF
    Camargo 3B
    Riley LF
    Swanson SS

The lineup against LHP is a bit of a mess in my opinion, the offense is fine, but I'm a bit scared of the OF defense, if you find another way to arrange it, be my guess.

AA already said that pitchers will be eased into long starts for probably the first two weeks, we might see some piggyback from Wright, Touki and Wilson which is great.

Freeman triple off the wall against Tomlin. Took all of two AB’s to get him back to mid season form lol

Snit said Camargo tweaked his hamstring. Riley will have a chance early to run away with the job.

Today's lineup for the final exhibition game. I'm guessing this is what our opening day line up will look like minus Jackson catching. If not this then something close to it I'm guessing.

    Acuña Jr. CF
    Albies 2B
    Freeman 1B
    Ozuna LF
    Adams DH
    Duvall RF
    Swanson SS
    Riley 3B
    Jackson C

Against our division opponents we have to play rhe majority of the games on the road.

    6 of 10 @ WSH
    6 of 10 @ NYM
    7 of 10 @ PHI

Not to mention 14 of 20 AL east games against NYY, BOS, and TB with just one 3 game series each against TOR and BAL.

That is a bunch of bologna to me. Why could they have not split the intradivision games evenly? 5 and 5 with each opponent. I don't get it.

Also, I don't know if Foltynewicz was experimenting or dialing his velocity down on purpose, but his FB only averaged 89 or so last night. And a couple of the 3 homers he allowed were on 3 breaking balls that were hung out to dry. I get it was an exhibition game, but the season starts in 2 days. 4.1 IP of 6 ER and 9 H is NOT encouraging. Be a different story if this happened in March and wouldn't be that huge of a deal. He did get an overwhelming majority of his pitches either in the strike zone yesterday or swung at, but at the same time when contact was made, it was home run contact. Concerning. Is he on a short leash this year? He's had 5 seasons already.......

It isn’t like all 5 of those seasons have sucked. 2018 was really good.

Also, it was raining and Folty said he struggled with it. He did not look very comfortable last night - whatever the reason.

2018 was the only season put of the previous 5 that were any good. Last year it was right back to the same thing that always plagued him-- home runs and mental composure breakdowns when the least thing did not go his way-- one bad call by the ump or a flub in the infield often led to him becoming frustrated and just go to throwing hard with no command, which led to a lot of meatballs that were sent rocketing 400 feet for 2 and 3 run home runs.

It feels like this year is do it or lose his job. It is his 6th season after all, and he never came close to replicating anything he did in 2018. Some have suggested moving him to the pen, but i don't think he has the mental make up for that. If he is to continue his MLB career, he MUST have appreciable success in this truncated season.

Hamels placed on the 45 day IL. Doesn't sound like we'll be seeing him pitch in Atlanta.
