    Mlb draft 2020

This forum has been dead for months without baseball. We have some tonight, I'll be posting the Braves draft picks and some thoughts here.

I said this about the NFL draft but, I can see a couple years from now this being considered a bad draft for a lot of teams. they are having to go off of over a year old info on a lot of players and without being able to work guy out and such they are having to rely more heavily on their regional scouts.

Been following Matt Powers tonight and he’s thinking the Braves are going to pick somebody pretty low on the board to save money but he sounds happy about who the player will be.

Jared Shuster goes to the Braves st 25th, LHP out of College, was ranked 77 by MLB but was a pop UP guy, Jim Callis Just said That if they had to re-rank the players toda he was probable around 25th so this was not really a reach for the Braves.

I wanted Cole Wilcox but at least We got a pitcher.

Seems like this kid is a late bloomer after he made some mechanical adjustments. Below is from DOB on The Athletic:

After posting ERAs of 7.41 as a freshman and 6.49 as a sophomore, striking out 126 while issuing an alarming 58 walks in 102 innings, Shuster made a mechanical adjustment to get more from his lower body, then saw that change result in major strides as a junior: He had a 3.76 ERA in four starts with 43 strikeouts and just four walks in 26 1/3 innings before the COVID-19 shutdown.

He had 10 or more strikeouts in three of his four starts this season, and in his final start against No. 2-ranked Louisville, Shuster had 13 strikeouts with one walk in 7 1/3 innings.

Shuster, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, went from second-round pick in most mock drafts to first-rounder. The Braves believe they can sign him for less than his slot value ($2.74 million) and use the savings to sign some high school players with significant asking prices Thursday.

“He has both size and strength,” Braves vice president of scouting Dana Brown said, “and also arm strength, with the makings of a plus-changeup. We like the arm strength up to 95 (mph) and plus-changeup combination, and also he has a pretty good feel for a slider. So we feel good about getting a left-handed starter with a three-pitch mix.”

It's only 4 starts but the swing and miss stuff he had during those games is impressive. Especially the start against L'Ville. I read he is also pretty athletic. DOB said he ran a 6.5 60, which is more like OF speed.

Sounds like their plan today is to use the savings on Shuster to pick some high school players who might slide.

We need big help to restock our lower levels so saving on the 1st pick will allow us to spend more now and help that.

I barely looked into the draft this year so I know basically zero prospects but I did see Marquis Grissom Jr is in this draft. I read he has a lot of upside so I hope we pick him.

This kid sounds intriguing. Read he was a big time recruit out of high school but his career was stalled after Tommy John. Lot of upside here.

Some of money #Braves saved taking Shuster and signing him below slot in 1st round enabled them to take Elder in the fifth (he'd been projected to go in 3rd but slipped because other teams couldn't meet his asking price). Braves expected to get him signed, probably already agreed

I am very excited! We are projected to have the 3rd best farm system after the draft. We have strong prospects dropping off soon and the lower levels are weak for us. The one advantage we have is that all non draftees will be 20k and everyone lost 40 players or so in the farm system this year. That bas
ically gives us a shot in the arm to recover from the sanctions which are almost over!

Well, it is only a combination of 4 draft picks (since the Braves had lost their 2nd round pick) and undrafted signees, so will that be able to do much to help the lower minors? I know that COVID obviously stopped HS/prep & college seasons in their tracks but it still felt a bit unwise for MLB to only do a 5 round draft.
