I don't think it's a fair assessment to say liberals feel less guilt.
Yes you're right. I think the term white guilt has more to it however, I think it encompasses not just the guilt aspect but the defensiveness that comes with it. I dont think liberals are defensive or feel a need to defend themselves when the actions of others are pointed out and scrutinized. Whereas on the right they seem to defend themselves while also, knowingly or unknowingly, defend the actions that are being scrutinized.

Take this left and right characterization with a grain of salt, as it has more to do with mainstream talking points, not necessarily individuals (although there is definite correlation there).

Im curious, do YOU feel any sort of guilt over americas history? If so, why? Cuz I'll be honest, I feel ZERO guilt for any actions from any muslim.terrorist, take the Colorado shooter for example. I dont know that mother****er, hes a completely separate individual with his own body his own thought and actions, completely separate from me. Why should I take ANY blame for what another man did?

I guess one would have to define 'guilt'. Obviously I know what it is, but what I mean is....do I personally feel guilt? In the true definition of the word, no, none...because I personally bear no guilt nor does anyone in my family history. But as a white person, I do feel some embarassment to know some of the things white people have done in the past or still do today. As I've said before, I have far more experience with native americans than blacks just because of where I've spent much of my life. I know what white people did to them and it's embarassing and I see the way they're often treated yet today and it's infuriating.

So maybe much of 'white guilt' is more 'white embarassment'
    gotta love 'referential' treatment

I don't think this "white guilt" thing is real, I think it's more that the vast majority don't want other people to be upset so people try to make them feel better by expressing sympathy and empathy. With every individual having a much louder public voice than at any point in history there are a lot of hurt feelings to respond to.

I don't think it is about people don't want others to be upset. That sounds weak to me for some odd reason. But doing the right thing by others as they would wish it done for them. Add the fact that our government comes up wanting in so many areas that a general sense that government isn't doing their job is widespread.

I think guilt complex.leads to the opposite of sympathy and empathy, I think it makes people defesnive and so they start ignoring or denying any claims of racism.

We see it.very clearly on this forum so I'm curious as to why this phenomena is so.

Unfortunately the posters whom I feel have the.most to gain from a discussion like this dont seem to want anything to do with this convo.

You think your "guilt" thing means people lash out at the people they are supposed to be "guity" about?

It seems to me most of the people who fit the "guilt" model are apologizing about their races impact on minorities not attacking them. Oh well.

Basically the idea is that this guilt complex leads people to take a defensive position. It makes them feel like they need to defend themselves or their "side".

I cant say where the guilt comes from. Maybe the people criticizing them are the ones who bring it into the equation. Maybe some is just innate internal emotion. I dont know exactly.

It's not about people.apologizing, it's about accepting the reality of the situation and trying to make things better rather than trying to defend the situation.

It is the most simplistic, multi-cultural, and probably the oldest rule in the world but the hardest one to follow. Too often we find a ''good reason" to not do it.

True, it's easy to lose track of one's morals, and it's hard to think putting empathy first. Having two teen daughters it comes up daily. There is a reason it is fundamental to pretty much every religion (it's generally the other rules around the golden rule that bring the pain to religions).

Most of "white guilt" shows up, to me anyhow, in white people lashing out at other white people for being insensitive or "racist" for things ... like they are guilty and they act on that by trying to find others who deserve the scorn to prove that they are not "one of them".

That's not what I'm referring to, I'm referring to the defensive reaction to racist situations.

And I'm saying that is not "white guilt". "White guilt" is more liberals going over the top to judge others and "fix" things for minorities.

The "defensive" reaction thing is more like people tired of hearing that they are guilty of something specific because of their skin color. That's not guilt but lack of it.

Of course some of the defensive stuff is because the claim was too close to home, but even that I wouldn't say was "guilt".
