It's all about them Benjamin's baby!!!!

We're in the middle of a modern day epidemic, this will go in the history books. People are getting sick and dying daily but yet some are worried about when are we gonna resume the NBA season.

Just speaking about the RGV (mainly Hidalgo county - where I live) the lockdown seems to be a big joke. It's supposed to start today but we've been told since Monday. The only places that were supposed to stay open were grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies & medical and law enforcement. But since Monday they've added auto parts stores, any corner store that sells fruits, vegetables & dairy products, parks, any fast food place that choose to stay open as long as it's only drive thru, liquor stores. There's others but it seems like the only businesses that got closed down are clothing and furniture stores. Stupid them for not selling milk lol.

Texas/Mexico borders are still open. At least in the RGV. Supposingly for medical emergencies. I went to Mexico on Wednesday and wasn't questioned going or coming.

And yes I did say liquor stores are still open.

Of course since you have the 3rd the most populated country in the world and the virus came a little bit later in the US.

This is an obvious stat with the 3rd most populated country in the world.

You can be both worried about people's health and if the NBA will resume, one does not prevent the other.

I believe it was you that said worked in a hospital so you're talking from personal experience. You're actually seeing what's going on. I don't disagree with anything you've said about how the government really shatting the bed overall on how they've handled this and how it's affected the nation.

But I'm talking on a personal level. Lord willing that neither I nor anyone in my household were to get the virus but if someone were to get sick I sure wouldn't blame the government. I wouldn't blame anyone but myself for not taking better precautions. I shouldn't have to look to the government to tell me to be clean, especially in public. I shouldn't have to wait for the government to tell me what precautions to take while I have access to the web.

I got 2 questions though for you: 1) Seeing how many people are infected but aren't showing any signs is the virus dormant? Is it gonna die off like a flu virus in a couple of weeks or can it kick in later on like HIV?

    2) I live way down South right next to Mexico, coronavirus cases have already began to pop up down here already. Being that a true quarantine hasn't really been implemented can the virus go back north and affect people that didn't get the virus the first time? Especially because it was said that the Texas/Mexico border were closed but that was a lie, the the bridges are still open.
Yeah, I agree that we're talking about different aspects of responsibility. I actually don't work in a hospital, I do have a PhD in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience and I am a professor/scientist so my expertise comes more in terms of how to analyze and interpret the numbers we're seeing more so than the ins and outs of actual biology behind the virus.

From my limited reading of the literature on the virus, this is similar to other flu type of viruses in that once a few days or in severe cases weeks have passed you'll rebound and be more or less back to normal (i.e., it's not like HIV). The reason this virus seems to have a more adverse affect on a select group of people than something like the flu is likely because we have no immunity to it so the body doesn't have any defenses against it. Our immune systems have memories (of sorts) where they can code and remember certain viruses. That's why inoculations such as vaccines work, because they introduce the virus into our system and then our immune system learns to detect it and builds an immunity to it (that's the gist level explanation but there's a lot more elegant details to it than that, which I'm sure someone like WS could explain).

As to whether the virus can come around a second time and infect people who were not infected the first time around, I would think the answer is yes, unless for some reason they're naturally immune to it and that's why they aren't getting infected (some experts hypothesize that most of the population is immune to it and that's why more people haven't been infected, but this is just speculation at this point). If they were already infected and it comes back around, then a lot of scientists and experts are hopeful that those individuals will already be inoculated against it, but since it's so early in the process we won't really know the answer to this question for a few years. It seems the virus is actually mutating (as all viruses do) and so now there are two strains of it out there so it is plausible that someone who caught one strain of the virus could then catch the other strain at a later point. However, if this were to happen, there's a pretty good chance that the reaction wouldn't be as severe as the first time, because your body would hopefully have built up some immunity to it by this point from the first time around, but people like the elderly and those with compromised immune systems will always be at higher risk because their defenses are already diminished.

We've also really ramped up testing of late so we're testing at super high levels. I do wonder to what extent we can trust the data coming out of china, because some have reported that China is underreporting their numbers so that it looks like they managed the situation better than they actually did. We're now up to close to 600k tests and will likely exceed that by the end of today. I'm hopeful that we'll start to see number of cases per day decrease at some point during this week or maybe early next week. If our social distancing measures are working then that's what we should start seeing, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Anthony Davis is teaming up with Lineage Logistics and pledging to match donations up to $250,000 to source meals from L.A.-area restaurants to provide to regional hospital workers fighting the COVID-19 crisis. Lineage is also looking to fill 260 jobs with Staples Center workers

Yeah man, it's funny how much of my evening watching basketball (and in the spring and summer baseball) takes up. Hopefully we can get past this sooner rather than later and get back to normal

LOL that sucks. People really don't care for one another and one day (if not now), mankind will lose. People near you wont care until the numbers start going up. Our area is pretty good. People are staying in mostly. Very little people out. I just drove around my son in my 1970 Mustang for fun. He was getting cabin fever. We do have an older population where I live though. Hope you and your family are good and everyone makes it through this.

Interestingly my wife's vet clinic is still open. The city is ok with that. It also helps that the our city supervisor and mayor are clients of my wife's. The owners are not even coming out. The staff goes and picks up the animals with full anti virus gear on and they wipe down the animals before entering the clinic, then my wife calls the owners with her update. They are not even taking any payments by hand, just calling in credit card numbers. This feels like a movie or something. It's crazy.

Half the cases are in New York area though. The corona cesspool. Also China is #1 in population and three months ahead of us. We haven't even started. It's the discipline of our respective countries. Americans are not a very disciplined country, China is.
