California parents get the name "Astros" banned from youth leagues

Many in the baseball world are upset with the Houston Astros amid their sign-stealing scandal that has dominated the offseason, and rightfully so.

Several youth baseball leagues in Southern California, however, have taken it to the next level.

According to the Orange County Register, multiple youth leagues have already banned teams from naming themselves the “Astros” for the upcoming season.

“Parents are disgusted,” Long Beach Little League president Steve Klaus said, via the Orange County Register. “They are disgusted with the Astros and their lack of ownership and accountability. We know there’s more to this scandal. What’s coming tomorrow? With the Astros, you’ve got premeditated cheating.”

It’s easy to understand why those in Southern California are particularly upset by the cheating scandal. The Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series in 2017, after all, and many fans feel cheated out of the title. Once news of the scandal broke, the Los Angeles City Council even pondered legislation asking Major League Baseball to intervene and award the championship to the Dodgers instead.

Even when the team apologized publicly this week, one Los Angeles television station labeled Jose Altuve simply as “Astros cheater.”

Though banning a team name from youth baseball leagues may sound a bit excessive — given that none of the children who play in the league or the adults who run it were even remotely involved in the scandal — players seem to be behind the move, too.

“I don’t think it’s right to represent a team that’s been cheating,” said 11-year-old Mick Peterson, who plays in the Long Beach league, via the Orange County Register. “The Dodgers got robbed. It’s not fair.”

Yes because when bringing up the Astros and cheating, we automatically think of kids in California.

They cited something about their kids doing it the right way.

Yes if their team name was the Astros they would automatically do it the wrong way.

Did the name "A's" get banned by little league, leagues after they were all on the juice? Just checking.

Every freak thinks their two cents is valid, its not.

That's kind of dumb. It makes no sense. It's not like the kids were the ones stealing the signs.

I'm gonna start naming all of my projects at work with "astros" or with names/nicknames of Astros players involved in this.

This is getting worse, and it's Manfred's fault.

Trotting out the Astros to lamely apologize for what is essentially unforgivable was a terrible idea. If he'd have just punished them, we could move on. But they didn't get what they deserved. The wound will remain open.

This year is going to be real ugly.

What a bunch of cream puffs! The kids could have had some fun with it, with garbage cans and whistling.

It's too bad that such uptight people have a say so in unimportant life decisions.

But at the same time, how many leagues use MLB team names for the kids? And how many of those leagues actually need all 30 nicknames? I don't see an issue with removing the Astros name for the time being.

I think the concern is that the fans/parents/other teams will poke fun at the kids about being cheaters just because they have Astros on their unis. Why even take the chance if it's an easy fix?

I can't imagine for one second that a fan/parent other teams would poke fun at them.

It shouldn't bother the kids anyway, as they are not actually involved in the cheating.

Exactly. Parents get into fights at house league games of all sports. There's some stupidity out there.

Im fine with it. If I'm a kid I don't want the name astros. Plus most these people prob Dodger fans. Astros cheated baseball and screwed over every team they beat by cheating. It leaves a sour taste.

Also this is America. Freedom. So if they wanna ban astros and most in community agree guess what? ban it.

If all the parents are in agreement, I have no problem with this decision. I do, however, think it is a bit silly.
