MLB weighing new playoff format; 7 playoff teams & teams choose opponent on live TV

Imagine a team picking its playoff opponent. Think about Brian Cashman and the Yankees deciding whether to face the Red Sox or avoid them in the first round of the postseason. All on live TV.

Well, it is probably coming soon to the major leagues.

MLB is seriously weighing a move from five to seven playoff teams in each league beginning in 2022, The Post has learned.

In this concept, the team with the best record in each league would receive a bye to avoid the wild-card round and go directly to the Division Series. The two other division winners and the wild card with the next best record would each host all three games in a best-of-three wild-card round. So the bottom three wild cards would have no first-round home games.

The division winner with the second-best record in a league would then get the first pick of its opponent from those lower three wild cards, then the other division winner would pick, leaving the last two wild cards to play each other.

To use the AL last season as an example, the Astros with the best record would have received the bye. The Yankees, with the second-best record, would have had the choice to pick from among the Rays, Indians and Red Sox. Boston had the worst record of that group. Would the Yanks pick them or avoid the baggage of a series with their rival? It would create a ton of strategy and interest, and this is what MLB wants to sell. The Twins would then pick next as the other division winner, and then the Aís with the best wild-card record would play the team not chosen by the Yankees or Twins.

    - Playoff teams expand from five to seven

    - Best division winner in each league gets a bye and moves straight to Division Series

    - Second and third best division winner choose their opponent on live TV on the last night of the regular season

    - Wild Card Round is a home three game series for those choosing their opponent

I hate this idea. I'd actually be fine with adding another playoff team in each leagueó12 total teams would match the NFL. But they've got to come up with a better format than this. This just seems super gimmicky.

I'd like to see a three game series for the Wild Card teams more than anything.

    Nah

I love the one game thing and this coming from a Mets fan that saw the Mets lose that one game to the giants in 2016.

On one hand. I hate the social media aspect of picking your opponent on live tv.

On the other hand. Losing against the opponent you picked on live tv would be priceless.

This is stupid. Manfred sucks. I'm not surprised though.
NFL has 12 playoff teams. NBA and NHL have 16.
    Makes total sense money wise.

They finally got these expanded playoffs right and now they want to ruin them. They might as well admit that they want to be the NHL and NBA and just go to 8. Letís get it over with and water down the regular season even more so.

Agreed. Having a sudden death game really is true to the term wild card. I think itís great the way it is. As for this new format? No way.

The Wild Card game does make for a very fun and intense night, but I absolutely hate that a season rides on one game.

I just think it sucks when one of the WC teams is only a WC team bc of the division they play in.

Like the Yankees and A's 2 years ago - NYY won 100 games and had the 3rd best record in the AL. Oakland won 97, 4th best record, but the 91 win Indians auto advanced to the ALDS bc they won their division.

I'd love to see divisions go away completely and everyone play a balanced schedule. Then just give the top 3 overall a free ride to the DS while seeds 4 and 5 play the WC game.
