As per Pedro Gomez of ESPN :

Good idea in my book. Going to be interesting hearing some of those exchanges between Managers and Players vs Umpires!

Hope TV crews are ready to have a couple second delay.....

The umps will use the mics to explain what is happening during a replay.

Even so, would be good to hear explanations rather than scratching your head wondering what the heck is going on in their heads on close calls. May lead to be umpires and more transparent decisions. Hopefully.

Why? This isn't the NBA. God I hate Manfred he's going to ruin this sport like Silver ruined the NBA.

A lot of people find baseball boring. We don't, we argue and discuss the sport on forums like this. But in this generation of social media and everything at their fingertips. Things like this add to the spectacle I guess. I'd expect a lot more of this kind of thing, along with the DH in the NL, more aggressive marketing of stars, etc. Makes sense.

The mics are literally just for the umps to explain to the crowd what happened in instant replay reviews. What's the big deal?

Guessing it's the tried and tested tradition argument. I always say the traditional aspect of the game are the biggest draw, and the biggest handcuff in the development of the game going forward. Baseball, and Manfred's gang, need to figure a way to bring in fresh blood, keep them, make the game more exciting, last for less time, market their stars, market the game, and also appeal to the intrinsic appeal of baseball. At the same time. It's arguably the toughest Commish job in all of sports, Imo. But unless the sport can appeal to all those aspects, it is in danger of losing it's soul, or losing fans and interest. Not many kids coming forward are going to follow their dads and moms, and grandparents, by following baseball as keenly as currently is the case. Things like this, for me, even minor, are steps forward. I said the same after challenges of calls was brought in. The game needs to live in the 21st century. Somehow need to make the greatest radio sport mainstream in the era of smart phones and social media.

The last thing I want is NFL referee-style lawyering over the rules. It's kind of baked in to that sport but I feel like they're just pushing it onto baseball, which is my favorite sport for its graceful simplicity.

I am also against instant replay in baseball except for the postseason anyway though. Maybe that is a minority view now but I bet there are a lot of people who think like I do that aren't just old timers.

I'm not a huge fan of instant replay either either. The process def needs to be expedited if nothing else. I'd also be fine with it only being allowed in the playoffs.

I don't think it's going to be like that at all. They will key up for the explanation, and then key off.
