Also, this makes the Corbin deal from last off-season look like a relative bargain

If I'm a team on the playoff bubble looking to bolster my starting rotation and have knowledge that Bumgarner will settle for a significantly smaller contract than Wheeler, I'd jump on negotiating with him ASAP.

Oh, I'd pay Wheeler before I'd pay Bumgarner (this deal).

Cut that to the last two years

If you prefer a two year window for evaluation, that is totally fine and understandable. Otherwise, it's awful convenient to narrow the window down to Wheeler's (by far) two best seasons.

I'm referring to who I would rather give a 5 year deal to, it's the better performer over the last year, two years, and really the last 3 years.

How is it convenient? It would only make sense to evaluate the most recent seasons, no?

I think it's a gross overpay, but Philly is pretty close so it makes sense for them. Could be in salary hell in a few years though.

I take Wheeler over MadBum. I think Madbum goes for a little less.

I was evaluating the last three seasons, he changed it to the last two (which were easily Wheeler's two best seasons and also included a fluky injury abbreviated season from Bumgarner). Either way has merit but looking at the last two seasons really pushes it more in Wheeler's favor, as I already explained.

Yes, I am aware. I'm working with the assumption that Bumgarner will take significantly less in said deal, which I clearly pointed out as my point of reference. You compared the two in a scenario where they'd ink the exact same contract.

I'd bet good money against the Phillies grabbing any of those three.

They're both risky at the numbers being thrown around.
