    Around the NHL thread

Figured we could use of these.

This also is big enough news but not one I wanted to start a thread about, so I'll put it in the news instead:
Toronto has relieved Mike Babcock of his coaching duties.
The Maple Leafs have named Sheldon Keefe as the club's new head coach. Toronto hasn't lived up to expectations this season, while posting a 9-10-4 record. The team is the middle of a six-game winless drought (0-5-1) and so the change was made. Babcock was in his fifth season as the head coach of the Maple Leafs. The club has made the playoffs for the last three years, but lost in the first round in each of those seasons.

Financial or ownership tired of not winning, especially with the talent they have had over the years with him there.

It's just weird to me, they missed the playoffs 9 of 10 years before he got there, they paid him, the team sucked year 1, then he got them to the playoffs 3 years in a row. Hockey is weird, any seed can beat any other seed, so all you need to do is get there and hope for the best, he he did that 3 years in a row, they didn't win a series, got off to a slow start this year and he's gone.

He and Quenneville seem to be the only high level coaches around, and Q gets fired all the time, too.

Idunno, just weird to me, why pay a guy to give you a chance, and he does it, and you fire him anyway.

and they apparently have been grooming an AHL coach to replace him, well, let's see how that works out, we've seen it before...

anyway, I've said it before but I'd welcome him back here

Apparently Babcock is a giant douchenozzle.

There is the Marner story: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nhl/...m10v1yg4m4zkbx

What Chelios had to say: https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1895955

    Then Franzen about Babcock https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/20...-have-ever-met

And of course Mike Commodore who is never shy to share what he thinks: https://detroitsportsnation.com/mike...1/2019/213100/ and https://detroitsportsnation.com/whoa...1/2019/205397/

It looks as though Trevor Dailey has asked for a trade to a SC contender. Hopefully we get a few decent draft picks.

Maybe a later round pick unless we get a really desperate team looking for a Vet D-guy.
