Yeah... I couldn't imagine a trade for Lindor not including DeJong. We already have two 3rd basemen.... I guess it could include Edman, and then they would use Carp as the super sub.

Of course... but how much extra would you do WITH DeJong to land Lindor?

Winter Meeting starts today. What do you think the Cardinals need to accomplish? Any expectations or predictions on what the Cardinals end up doing?

Personally, I can see the Cardinals finalizing a trade by the end of the meetings. Maybe sign some periphery players. I doubt we come out with a big signing. If there is a signing it will be Ozuna's replacement or Ozuna himself.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were absolutely ZERO moves made by the Cardinals this week. They're still waiting on Carlos... and are probably going to grab someone closer to spring training. The good news about that is, they can wait and grab one of the many good pitchers that often get passed on for one reason or another. Should be a cheap way to get a helpful arm.

With the Cubs pushing the luxury tax the next two years, I'd be watching to see if they have to regress further, which would mean we could make an argument we need to become more aggressive in the short term.

I wouldn't, he's a marginal upgrade (though clearly an upgrade) and DeJong is so well cost controlled for such a long time, that it would hurt our competitive window from 2022-2025.

I care about those years, just like I care about 2020 and 2021.

I think they'll do a fairly minor trade (if I had to predict anything). Maybe moving one of the exess outfielders (Thomas, O'Neill, Arozarena, Garcia, etc) for either a lefty bat or a reliever.

But not likely doing much overall.

I don't expect us to do anything big this off-season.

Cardinals are entering in on the pursuit of Bumgarner. I love the idea of getting a lefty, but I honestly don't think he's the one to go after. I think Dallas Keuchel is a better deal, and just as good of a pitcher. However, I would be very happy and excited if the Cardinals landed either one of those. Even if that meant they did NOTHING else the entire offseason.

At least Bumgarner can handle the bat. Could also be our big bat signing too lol.

Moz on MLB Network made it sound like they aren't expecting to do anything in terms of pitching other than some minor moves, that they like what they have and can improve internally there. But he said the outfield and a left handed bat is more probable in some fashion (he didn't imply depth move, or big move, just some move).

Also, he sees Tommy Edman as a Ben Zobrist type, and basically expects Carpenter to rebound and be the third basemen the next two years.

    I'm summarizing his words.

He did say they are going to be listening on trades and looking for any move that can improve the team in 2020.

Which isn't really saying anything, other than if a team calls or names a player they will shop, as they would be willing to engage. Which, btw, is what happened last year with Goldschmidt. Team entered the Winter Meetings and representatives say players they are willing to listen to on moving as they enter that, and the D'Backs said Goldie, and the Cards started asking. But they didn't enter the off-season directly thinking about Goldschmidt.

Which makes sense. We hear rumors as fans, but in reality, front offices may have internal discussions about players they'd like to acquire, but they don't directly do anything or talk about it until a team says they are willing to move a particular player. Then the talks can actually happen. And some front offices are more aggressive and call more than others.

I don't get the impression that Moz and company call anyone, but rather sit back and listen and if a player comes available they like, then they engage.

I do know they made Jose Martinez available in trade talks that way a few years back before he was extended.

    Just some food for thought.

We may only see a left handed outfielder upgrade (either trade or signing) and that might be it this off-season.

I'd take Keuchel at 38mil for 2 years over MadBum at 110mil for 5.

I agree, but Bumgarner has been regressing for a few years, has a lot of mileage, is a total dick (Carpenter like though).

I wouldn't go over 4/$72M for him. Which likely means we wouldn't get him. I can see some team approaching $100M for him, and I would never consider him at that price.

He's exactly the type of player and signing that could ruin our next 5 years. I would consider him Dexter Fowler 2.0 but would miss more time.
