What player is the biggest surprise in baseball this year?

Myself and a couple of friends were having this discussion at work last week. Wanted to know who those players were for you guys. I was saying Tommy La Stella and Derek Dietrich. I also never expected Jeff McNeil to be batting .356 in July. Yeah he hit last year but carrying it over and playing better when you dont make the bigs till age 26 is very impressive.

Bryan Reynolds, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Cody Bellinger, Josh Bell, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Shane Beiber, Eduardo Escobar, Lucas Giolito, Ketel Marte, and Jorge Polanco all come to mind.

Bellinger and it's really not a debate for me.

It is unbelievably rare to just chop your K rate in half and raise every single aspect of your batted ball profile.

Cody Bellinger went from being a solid power hitter to the best thing since Barry Bonds.

John Means wasn't on many, if any, Orioles prospects lists, and he made the ASG as a player vote-in, and looks to be a finalist for the ROY award.

For the Yankees, 2 guys stand out:

DJ LeMahieu. I knew he was a solid player, but didn't expect him to be hitting .336/.383/. 518 with 12 HRs and 63 RBIs at the break, while also playing solid defense at 2B, 3B and 1B. He has easily been the team's MVP.

Gio Urshela. Dude was a ~.230 career hitter with 8 career HRs in 167 career games over the past 3 seasons. He's hit .308/.359/.475 over the course of 71 games this year, with 7 HRs. He played pretty much every day this year until Didi Gregorius came back. Now with Didi back, he's mostly been the backup IFer since DJLM is playing 3rd and Gleyber 2nd.

Both of these guys deserve huge props in helping the Yankees be as good as they have been this year.

Shout out to Luke Voit as well. Wasn't sure if last year's 2 months in NY was just a Shane Spencer type act or not. But Voit has been a legit middle of the order bat all season long.

I can also be on board with Gio and DJLM. The worry was his offense not carrying over from Coors, but he seems to hit well in Yankee Stadium and he's more than holding his own on the road.

I don't think anyone saw Hyun Jin Ryu's season coming. Even at his best he was never preventing runs at this rate. (probably won't sustain it).
