Cap casualties. We legit only barely have enough room for marner. 0 wiggle room.

I prefer Johnson and kap over brown even though I love the guy.

Dont get me wrong, I totally understand the context. Someone had to go and Brown probably has the lowest ceiling/explosiveness of them all. It still sucks though, I love his intangibles.

Agree. He could be the sens captain by next season. Because I like him so much - I actually am happy he will get a good opportunity with the sens. Should be playing top line minutes. A 30/30 season is well within his abilities.

We will be enjoying the cap space next season when ceci expires though. Basically let's us re-sign Barrie.

I love that they're only paying money for talent. Not grit or filling some role.

That's how it should be in Toronto. You want a big contract? Then you better be one of the top players in the league.
I would expect them to package Nylander if he has another pedestrian season (I don't think he will).

I wish there was a soft cap or if you could franchise tag one or two players. You draft well, you develop well and then you get ****ed because you did a good job. It's not fair because not every team is in an area with no provincial/state tax like Florida. Brown would of been awesome to keep but he had to become expendable unfortunately.

I see your premise Kinger, however, let me counter with: there's also not many teams that can do what the Leafs do with the LTIR game. Not many teams can wiggle out of cap hell the way we did Dubas' nifty maneuvering and our fat pockets. If I was a mid or low market team that was in the same situation, I could see your argument. However, we're not. We're sitting in the hockey mecca and while state tax isn't something we take advantage of, there are other things we do.

I'm happy for Connor as a person just wish it was somewhere out West or just not with Montreal/Ottawa lol. I ca see him having a 30/30 season too. Not sure about captain material next season, I think if Connor Brown's your captain this early in his NHL career you have a lota issues (which they do though lol). But yeah, in the grand scheme of things it was the right move to make for sure.

I see where you're coming from. I just wish keeping your drafted and developed players was easier for every team across the board.

They definitely need to do something about the tax differences.

What I'd like to see is a 10% cap reduction on players that you draft. Reward teams that draft and develop well so they can keep their own guys. It would either allow you to pay those guys a little more to keep them around come UFA time or pay them fair value and gain. The teams that have more guys like this could have a huge advantage in the cap world.

    For example the Leafs have:
Matthews: Cap hit reduced to $10,470,600 ($1,163,400 savings)
Nylander: Cap hit reduced to $6,266,130 ($696,236 savings)
Rielly: Cap hit reduced to $4,500,000 ($500,000 savings)
Johnsson: Cap hit reduced to $3,060,000 ($340,000 savings)
Gauthier: Cap hit reduced to $607,500 ($67,500 savings)
Dermott: Cap hit reduced to $770,000 ($86,333 savings)

Marner: Assuming 6 year deal @$10M per, Cap hit reduced to $9,000,000 ($1,000,000 savings)

Total Savings: $3,863,469 on having just 7 drafted players on the roster, but you can basically add another top 4 D or another top 9 forward with that money saved.
    2015 Re-Draft Dream Team

    Hall-Backes-Cammalleri
    Lupul-Bjugstad-Brown
    Rieder-Rakell-Hayes
    Jaskin-Jenner-Stempniak

    McDonagh-Doughty
    Orpik-Jones
    Campbell-Gudbranson

    Bernier
    Tokarski

I love that idea. Would really help with rebuilds too, while helping teams keep cores together.

I like where you're coming from as well. That would literally kill trades and free agency for a handful of teams though. Also ok with that. I thìnk you would have to limit the number of players you can do that with. Say 3-5 players.

Not sure if anyone watched the World Jr Showcase. But Nick Robertson looks like such a steal where Dubas picked him. Literally stole that guy in the 2nd round.

Still no news on Marner. Other than the fact his father is apparently a nightmare. Kinda wish there'd be an offer sheet just to get this over with one way or another. As good as he is, they are drastically overrating him at this point.

Yeah I think he is about a 75 point player on most teams. I don't think he deserves much more than Nylander. 2mil more at most.

Sheesh... 21st ranked farm... I don't think we're getting enough credit for our young goalies and I count 5 guys who are almost guaranteed to be NHL players in the future... I don't see the same for the other farms around our ranking. But still this farm could use some top end talent for sure.
