This move solves the Rangers cap issues in 2019, but does not solve the 2020 and beyond. Makes it all the more likely that Kreider is dealt (though now we have more leverage).

Not a fan of buyouts but atleast we can focus on getting something for Kreider now.

The good news is we are just about cap compliant and the team has a ton of young talent that is still on their first contract so the dead salary won't be as impactful in Years 3 and 4 as it may be with some other rosters around the league.

Not to mention, we have Namestnikov (4m), Kreider (4.6M), Staal (5.7M), Lundqvist (8.5M), and Smith (4.3M), and Strome (3.1M) for a total of 30.2M coming off the books in the next two years, with little indication that the team is going to resign any of them (and if they do it would be at far less than what they currently make). The team has a good enough prospect pool where they can let the youth take over and save that money for some of the extensions that will be needed in the years to come, but once we get through next year, the dead salary won't be an issue.
