2019 Minor Leagues -- Lewis, Kirilloff, Graterol & Co.

I'm looking forward to writing about these and other guys this summer. I've seen Lewis and Kirilloff play a few games, but never had the privilege of seeing Graterol pitch. From what the Kernels' staff told me, he is as good as anyone they have ever had there. All 3 are in the MLB.com top 100, with Kirilloff and Lewis in the top 10. All 3 should start at Pensacola in the Southern League (AA). None are on the 40-man roster just yet, but all should get invited to major league camp to show what they can do.

Last night, the Kernels won a well-pitched game 10-4. Jordan Balazovic pitched 5 strong innings, allowing a run on 4 hits, no walks and 9 Ks. His fastball topped out at 95 on the stadium gun and I expect a couple more MPH as the season progresses and we get into warmer weather. His curve is a work in progress and he uses a splitter for his change up. It topped out at 89. Trey Cabbage his a mammoth home run to seal the game. He was 3/5 with 2 scored and 3 driven in. Yunior Severino was 1/1 with 4 walks and 3 runs scored. He looks like he is having the time of his life playing baseball and I hope that continues. DaShawn Kiersey was 2/3 with 3 driven in. The Peoria Chiefs have a very good player on their roster, at least for a while. Nolan Gorman was 4/4 with a double, a triple a run scored and 2 driven in. His bat will play anywhere, but there are a lot of questions about his defense at 3B.
Pensacola took a pair from Mobile 7-0 and 4-3. In game 1, Jimmy Kerrigan hit a 2-run homer and Taylor Grzelakowski was 1/3 with a double, 1 scored and 2 driven in. Jorge Alcala allowed 3 hits and struck out 6 in 5 innings to pick up the win.
In game 2, The Blue Wahoos won 4-3. Brusdar Graterol started the game and gave up a run on 3 hits, 2 walks and 6 Ks in 4.2 innings. Cody Stashak picked up the win in relief giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits with 2 Ks in 1.1 innings. Dusten Knight struck out 1 in .2 innings to pick up a save. Jordan Gore (SS) was 1/3 with 2 runs scored and 1 driven in. Taylor Grzelakowski was 1/4 with 2 RBI.
Ft Myers beat Charlotte 4-3 with Royce Lewis going 1/2 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored. Trevor Larnach was 1/3 with 2 RBI. Jhoan Duran started, walked 1 and struck out 4 in 4 innings. Tom Hackimer picked up the win in relief giving up a walk to go with his 3 Ks in 1.1 innings.
    Rochester's game was rained out.
    3-0 for the farm.

Today, the Twins farm system had a pretty good day with Pensacola, Ft Myers and Cedar Rapids all winning.
Pensacola beat Biloxi 9-2 with Miguel Sano and Jaylin Davis homering. Sano was 1/4 with 3 RBI. Davis was 2/3 with 2 runs scored. Sano is hitting .167 right now. Griffin Jax (2-0, 0.53) got the win by allowing 2 unearned runs on 5 hits and a walk with 5 Ks in 6.2 innings. Ryan Mason (5 saves, 0.00) picked up his 5th save giving up 2 hits and a walk, striking out 3 in 2.1 innings.
Ft Myers beat Palm Beach 4-0 with Royce Lewis going 2/5 with a double and 2 RBI -- he looks like he is warming up after starting the season in a slump. His average is up to .227. Trevor Larnach was 2/5 and has a season average of .279. Catcher Ryan Jeffers was 4/4 with a homer and 2 runs scored, bringing his average up to .295. Jordan Balazovic (1-0, 0.00) threw a gem, allowing no baserunners in 7 innings. He struck out 10. Anthony Vizcaya (2 saves, 3.57) gave up a hit and a walk with 3 Ks in 2 innings to pick up the save.
Cedar Rapids beat Dayton 4-0 with catcher David Banuelos going 2/3 with a homer and 2 runs scored. 1B Chris Williams was 2/4 with a double, a run scored and 1 driven in. Gabriel Maciel was 2/4 with a run scored and 1 driven in. Cole Sands (1-0, 1.73) allowed 3 hits and 6 Ks in 7 innings to pick up the win.
    Rochester was rained out.
    3-0 for the farm.

    Twins: Jordan Balazovic, RHP (No. 19) -- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 12 K; Trevor Larnach, OF (No. 5) -- 4-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R (Class A Adv Fort Myers)
Balazovic has posted double-digit strikeouts in his first two starts for the Miracle after striking out a career-high 12 batters against Bradenton. The 20-year-old right-hander, a former fifth-round pick (2016), owns a 1.93 ERA and 55/8 K/BB in 32 2/3 innings so far in his first full season. Larnach, a 2018 first-rounder out of Oregon State, matched his career high with four hits as he recorded his sixth multihit performance in 11 games this month. Through 34 games, hes hitting .303/.362/.439.

    Twins: Brusdar Graterol, RHP (No. 3, MLB No. 61) -- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K (Double-A Pensacola)
Graterol picked up his third straight win in his second straight scoreless start (10 1/3 innings). The 20-year-old threw 46 of his 80 pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA 1.69 through six starts this season. Graterol is pitching at the Double-A level for the first time, but is seemingly having no problem with the competition and has struck out 39 over 42 2/3 innings.

Larnach was one of two Miracle players to collect multiple hits in their loss against Bradenton. The multihit effort was his seventh in 13 games this month, during which hes batting .412/.483/.467 with 21 hits. Twins: Travis Blankenhorn, 2B/3B/OF (No. 28) 2-for-5, 2 HR, 2 RBI (Double-A Pensacola)
Blankenhorn boosted his average to an even .300 with the third two-homer game of his career and his first of the season. The 22-year-old put Pensacola on the board first with a solo blast in the first inning and then broke a tie with his homer in the fifth. However, Mobile eventually came away with the win. After hitting 11 homers over 124 games last season, Blankenhorn has gone deep six times in 2019.

Twins: Royce Lewis, SS (No. 1, MLB No. 7) -- 1-for-4, solo HR (1) (Class A Adv Fort Myers)
A day after getting pushback for doing pushups after a double, Lewis flexed his muscle and hit his first homer of the season. The 19-year-old, who is hitting .234 this season, wasted little time putting Fort Myers on the board as he hit a solo blast in the first inning. However, that turned out to be the extent of the Miracle's offensive production as it fell, 2-1, to St. Lucie.

    Twins: Lewis Thorpe, LHP (No. 8) -- 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K (Triple-A Rochester)
Thorpe threw 60 of his 90 pitches for strikes and put together one of his best starts this season. The 23-year-old, who signed with the Twins in 2012, has had mixed results so far this year. His ERA sits at 6.70, but that's a bit misleading as he gave up nine runs over four innings in his first start of the season. Thorpe has also made a habit of racking up strikeouts this year and has fanned 53 over 41 2/3 innings.

    Twins: Luis Rijo, RHP (No. 30) -- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K (Class A Cedar Rapids)
Rijo, 20, picked up his first win in his seventh start for the Kernels, tossing the first five innings as he and two relievers combined for a four-hit shutout against Burlington. He faced three above the minimum in the outing, throwing 52 of 86 pitches for strikes in his first scoreless performance of 2019. The Venezuelan right-hander owns a 3.47 ERA on the season, with 30 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings.

Twins: Alex Kirilloff, OF (No. 2, MLB No. 12) 2-for-5, 2B (Double-A Pensacola)
After a huge 2018 season during which he hit .348/.392/.578 with 20 homers over 130 games, Kirilloff has gotten off to a slow start in 2019. Albeit in only 19 games, the 2016 first-round Draft pick is hitting .227/.318/.307. Kirilloff was regarded as one of the best pure hitters of his Draft class and after missing the 2017 season (Tommy John), Kirilloff showed why in 2018. Its seemingly only a matter a time before he starts to hit up this year.
