Alex Smith out for the year with broken tibia and fibula

Most of you have heard by now, but Alex Smith is out for the year with a broken tibia and fibula. Oddly enough, this shares a lot of similarities to the Joe Theismann injury that happened 30 years ago to the day- and Theismann was in attendance today at the game as well.

    -Final game score was 23-21

-Romeo Crennel was on the sidelines for both injuries

-Both in the twilight of their careers- Smith is 34, Theismann was 35

-Joe Jacoby missed the game for Theismann with an injury, and Trent Williams missed this game

-53 NFL games have finished with the 23-21 score, three of which the Redskins participated in. Those three games all occurred on November 18th.

It will be a long road to recovery for Smith. Theismann tried to come back, was released the following season and started his broadcasting journey. It will all depend on how the leg heels- Theismann's leg ended up being shorter when it healed, and this is Smith's planting foot. Smith also relies heavily on his legs, so it is entirely possible we saw the end of a career today. The entire Redskins bench and about 3/4 of the Texans bench met him at midfield as he was being carted off.

The Redskins will start Colt McCoy for the rest of the season. They are currently bringing the following quarterbacks in for tryouts tomorrow: Mark Sanchez, EJ Manuel, TJ Yates, Kellen Clemens and Josh Johnson. Jordan Reed, a former high school standout QB, serves as the emergency third quarterback. It's a very short week for whoever they sign to learn anything about the offense, as the Redskins travel Wednesday to play in Dallas on Thursday.

I like Washington's chances with Colt McCoy. Alex looked as though he was still having a difficult time picking up Gruden's offense.

multiple sources are saying hes battling a major infection with the leg from complications from the surgery. I honestly wouldn't expect him back on an NFL field

My feeling is that he isn't going to have a chance at playing in 2019, and would be pushed toward coming back in 2020. But after this injury, being 36 years old and collecting all of the money he has collected during his career, does Smith even bother with a comeback?

    Absolutely not

I wouldn't think so honestly.. wife & 2 kids, more money than his great-great grandchildren would ever be able to spend.

He's still guaranteed about $50 million over the next two seasons... Unless his leg is amputated, I'm sure he's not planning on calling it quits any time soon.

he gets his guaranteed money no matter if hes playing football on sundays in the fall/winter or sitting on the couch watching pornhub.

And it also counts against our salary cap if hes in uniform or he isnt

I misunderstood what you were saying, but my point stands in the opposite direction. Snyder's already faced a loss of cap space for manipulating it during the uncapped year, I don't think the owners would be happy if he set this kind of precedent.

I was just referring to the possibility of him retiring.

Apparently, they took out a $12 million insurance policy on Smith, which could be used against the guaranteed money. It's not all of it, but roughly 20% of the amount owed.
