I don't think he can trust Pence to do it. Gerald Ford thought he could win (re)election against Jimmy Carter. Mike Pence knows that his only chance to be president would come in four years. That makes the dynamic entirely different. He has been rather subservient. But he strikes me as a soulless SOB as opposed to someone who is truly loyal. I don't think Trump trusts anyone but himself to pardon himself.

I just don't think he is physically capable of trusting anyone enough to trust Pence to do this. I get what you're saying and it makes some level of logical sense. But Donald Trump is a pathological liar, which means he also sees everyone else as similarly pathological liars.
