I don’t deny there are some non-altruistic motives. But all Tedward had to do to counter it was raise some money or work to put legislation forward that might help some people get heat/electricity/water. He could have called up Trump and said “hey Donald, you think you could spare a few million since you’re a billionaire and all”.
