At Least We’re Winning the War on the Environment

While the US continues to muddle along in its variously ineffective wars in the Middle East, we can take heart that the current administration — led by EPA director Scott Pruitt (rhymes with “screw it,” which of course is exactly what he wants to do to the ecosystem) — may actually be winning its war on the US environment.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order (13778) in February 2017, seeking to replace the rule known as Waters of the United States, or WOTUS*, with a much more limited definition of what constitutes a protected federal waterway.

If implemented, this new rule being prepared by Pruitt’s agency would reduce the number of wetlands under federal protection and thereby the need for developers to buy mitigation credits.

"It would destroy wetland mitigation banking at the federal level," said Royal Gardner, who specializes in mitigation banking as a professor at Florida's Stetson University College of Law.

The EPA said it is close to delivering a proposed step two rule that would revise the definition of "waters of the United States" to the Office of Management and Budget.

Making rich people more rich should be the goal of every American.

Back to the original post, I agree that environmental issues is a big weak point with conservatives. But how is the war in the Middle East ineffective?

Please...take it to another thread. It’s tough enough as it is keeping focused on the issue at hand.

It was mentioned in the post I was referring to, so...

People like Trump won't be satisfied until there's a skyscraper on every square inch of Earth, and it looks like the one-city planet in that crappy Star Wars movie "The Phantom Menace". It's all a part of greed, which is an addiction to money -- a stronger addiction than crack and heroin put together.

The opening up of National Park protected lands is what really blows me away. That has always been a bipartisan value going back to Teddy Roosevelt. Every president has added new protected lands. This guy opens up a chunk of ****ing Grand Staircase (among others) in his first 500 days. Unreal.

I forget who it was on this site telling me that it was opened up just so a few more hotels and restaurants could open up on the grounds and definitely not anything at all related to energy and drilling or logging or anything of that nature.

Yeah. Those days are gone. The right doesn't care one bit about the environment.

That’s what I assumed given who Trumps buddies are. Every empty space is just a chance for a new hotel.

The Frakin’ Hotel and Resort. And if you really believe that it is a vacation destination, you are out of your fraking mind.

Except bring in the bulldozers, get rid of all those critters and put up a parking lot. There is money to be made in those hills.

People on the whole don't care about this until their tap water runs brown. Even then they will just buy bottle water. Same with the air quality as the dismantling of EPA by Trump's hitman shows.

So dance in the woods while we still have them.

According to some in the know, the issue of climate change is the new exemplar of the culture wars.

Tempers flared in Australia over the weekend as retailers implemented a ban on single-use plastic bags.
One customer reportedly grabbed a shop assistant by the throat, while another called staff "money-grabbing scum".

The ban on single-use bags is part of a national push to reduce waste. Retailers in four of six Australian states now face fines for using them.

More than 60 countries including the UK have now introduced bans or levies on single-use bags, according to the UN.

The UN environment agency estimates that up to 5 trillion single-use bags are consumed worldwide each year.
