I really would like to start placing bets but I'm worried I would get carried away from time to time.

You would lol. And sportsbetting is truly extremely difficult nowadays. Close to unbeatable for 95% on the long term given the vig to the sportsbook.

A $100 series bet on Miami pays little under $500 back (about 400 profit depending where you bet it).

Yea. Odds makers have gotten so much better at setting these lines that it really takes something major to beat their odds.

The biggest advantage a smart bettor has is to take advantage of the general betting publics perception of a team relative to the reality of how that team actually performs. Because the line (especially the closing line) is more of a reflection of the market than it is their actual opinion on who is the favorite+underdog.

In this series the Sixers are probably slightly overvalued (so betting on the Heat to cover but still lose the game will likely be +everyone on a couple games), but they're still the clear favorite. If I end up betting G1 it will be Heat +7 or 7.5 points.
