He died months after stating God does not exist. Yikes.

I can guarantee you that everyone on this planet has had the thought cross their mind, and if you believe in God, you believe he can understand your thoughts, so no difference.

If you want the ultimate, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It's not tragic to die doing what you love.

yeah I mean my only reason for kinda sorta believing in God, is 2 reasons:

1- earth is too beautiful for science alone to have created
2- if I die, and meet God, what answer do I give when he/she asks why I didn't believe?

I figure, why not have a little faith, worst case I turn to dirt and answer to nobody..

and to clarify, I don't believe in Jesus Christ. I believe something spiritual exists, I just don't know what it is. God I guess?

Iím gonna tread lightly but for your 2nd point, isnít that kind of believing in God as default/out of fear? Itís kind of like ĎI donít believe in God but iím gonna say I do just to avoid going to hellí

God just seems like a bully to me if he does exist.

Regardless, R.I.P. Hawking. Probably top 5 scientists in the past 150 years. Was very sad to see him go yesterday.

In the celeb death thread I talked about how most deaths don't really impact me at all. I feel so disconnected from 99% of celebs.

This one has been on my mind all day. An absolute monolith. His ability to explain complex and mind-boggling stuff in such simply and easy to digest ways was unbelievable, and really helped get me into cosmology at a young age. I've read most of his books and I feel they have had a long lasting effect on my life. I'm currently sitting in a cubicle at work where the only decorations I have are space-related. He was a massive influence on my life due to the scientific curiosity his books instilled in me.

It sucks that such a brilliant, kind and funny man suffered so much his whole life. But it's a testament how it never slowed him down and by all accounts never impacted said kindness and sense of humor.
