Rays going to a 4 man rotation, 5th spot will be a "bullpen day"

    https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/...n-orioles.html

I don't know how to feel about this because who knows how long it lasts but I'm torn between whether the Rays are just too cheap to bring back Cobb/get another SP or they are using analytics hoping it takes the league by storm.

    I think it's a mixture of both.

I think they see this as more efficient in regards to payroll, but also gives them some flexibility in terms of effectiveness. They can also find a developed starter in this mixture.

To the payroll point though. They can always throw a AAAA caliber guy in that 5th spot to eat innings, and relievers are starting to get paid more and more. So I dunno if this is entirely payroll driven.

I read an article from DRay's Bay that brought up since most pitchers suffer the third time through the order, it might just be better to go with a 4 man rotation and an expanded bull pen to pick up the innings.

You could go also with 12 pitchers that each go through a lineup once, every 4th day, and keep a 13th as an NL team as an extra inning long man, and have a few available to go a second time through when necessary.

So not really a 4 man rotation. A five man rotation with an undetermined, cycled through, called up, whatever words to describe it, 5th starter.

Yeah, god forbid there's people that love the game that are intelligent and have no athletic ability right.

I think they did this because of De Leon's elbow blowing up.
