Tim Hardaway Jr. (leg) back on hardcourt for Knicks after missing 20 straight

    7:00 PM ET

    Ian Begley
    ESPN Staff Writer

Knicks guard Tim Hardaway Jr. will return to the court on Friday after a 20-game absence due to a left leg injury.

Hardaway Jr. will come off of the bench in the Knicks' game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Head coach Jeff Hornacek has said that he'd like Hardaway Jr. to work on his conditioning before he returns to the starting lineup. The shooting guard hasn't played since Nov. 29 due to a stress injury in his left leg.

New York (18-21) has struggled without Hardaway Jr., going 8-12. The club has lost nine of its last 12 and has missed the pressure Hardaway Jr. applies to opposing defenses.

After a slow start to the season, Hardaway Jr. thrived in Hornacek's offense, averaging 17.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

The Knicks hope that Hardaway Jr.'s return can ease the scoring burden off of forward Kristaps Porzingis and create more easy baskets.
Porzingis is shooting 40 percent during Hardaway Jr.'s absence. Before Hardaway Jr. went down with the injury, Porzingis was shooting 47 percent from the floor (and 40 percent from beyond the arc).

Hardaway Jr.'s return should eat into playing time for both Michael Beasley and Lance Thomas, the Knicks' top individual defender. Beasley had shouldered the scoring burden for the Knicks often in Hardaway Jr.'s absence, averaging 19 points on 54 percent shooting in New York's previous nine games.

Already like KP better tonight, and it's all in how they use him. On one play he was part of a double cut to the hoop, and when nothing came of that he got open on a pick-n-roll that go him an easy dunk.

there is Lance wide open three and a miss, yes his % is high but he's never covered, it's a pure ugly shot.

I would have passed to Lee in the other corner,

He got burned on one play. Other than that Butler has been a non factor with 2 points and a TO that Lance forced him into. Knicks defense as a unit looks as good as it has to start a game all season.
