Border Patrol says apprehensions in the Rio Grande Valley have already surpassed all of 2018

Less than seven months into the fiscal year, the Rio Grande Vally sector has apprehended more than 164,000 migrants.
Less than seven months into the fiscal year, the number of undocumented immigrants who have been apprehended or turned themselves in to U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley has already surpassed last year’s total, the agency said Monday.

From October, when the federal government’s fiscal year began, through Sunday, more than 164,000 migrants have been apprehended in the sector, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. During the entire 2018 fiscal year, the sector reported 162,262 apprehensions.

The increase is the result of an ongoing surge of migrants, most of them from Central America, who are crossing the border to seek asylum. The 2019 total for the Rio Grande Valley includes 15,310 unaccompanied minors apprehended from October through March — compared to 23,760 during the entire 2018 fiscal year — and 79,000 people who were traveling in families during the same time frame, which has already surpassed the 63,280 family members apprehended in 2018 (April figures were not immediately available).

The Border Patrol has reported similar increases along the entire southwest border.

President Donald Trump has made several attempts to curb the flow of migrants attempting to enter the country illegally, including last year’s controversial zero-tolerance policy that led to family separations — a policy that was rescinded after sparking public outrage. The president also recently enacted the Migration Protection Protocols, also known as “Remain in Mexico,” which requires some asylum seekers to wait in Mexico until their court hearings in the United States. That policy is still in effect pending a federal appeals court’s decision on whether to let the program continue.

Last week, U.S. Attorney General William Barr ruled that some asylum seekers are generally ineligible for bonds and should remain in federal detention while their asylum cases are pending. That policy will go into effect in about three months, although it is likely to be challenged in court.

breaking records, but not a crisis or anything.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...il/1144303001/

The number of asylum-seeking Central American families crossing the southern border broke another record in April, with Border Patrol agents apprehending 58,474 members of family units during the month, an all-time high, according to data released Wednesday.

The flood of migrants has overwhelmed Border Patrol stations and other federal facilities, forcing immigration agents to release migrants directly into U.S. border communities with only the hope that they'll appear for their immigration court hearings, the head of the Border Patrol said during a congressional hearing on Wednesday.

Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost said she has reassigned hundreds of agents to process and started building temporary tent cities to house the flood of migrants.

But she told members of the Senate that such temporary fixes aren't enough. They need to overhaul immigration laws and provide additional funding to her agency, she said, or risk losing control of the southern border.

"We cannot address this crisis by simply shifting more resources or building more facilities," she said. "It's like holding a bucket under a faucet: it doesn't matter how many buckets you give me if we can't turn off the flow."

President Donald Trump has tried all kinds of measures to stop the flow of Central Americans.

He has deployed National Guardsmen and active-duty military troops to lay razor wire and back up Border Patrol agents. His Department of Justice has tried to cut off or limit asylum for certain groups, efforts that have been blocked by federal judges. His Department of Homeland Security has implemented a policy forcing Central American asylum-seekers to return to Mexico after they've submitted their asylum claim.

Yet still, the number of people crossing the border continues to climb. Overall, Border Patrol agents took 109,144 migrants into custody after presenting themselves at ports of entry or illegally crossing the border. That is the highest monthly total since 2007, and represents the second straight month where more than 100,000 migrants are taken into custody by Border Patrol.

ICE Warns Of Child Endangerment After Illegal Migrant Allegedly Tried To Pass 6-Month-Old Off As His Own
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials are warning of the “unprecedented level of child endangerment” at the border after an illegal migrant allegedly tried to pass a 6-month-old off as his own child.

U.S. Border Patrol apprehended Amilcar Guiza-Reyes, a 51-year-old man from Honduras, on May 7 after authorities caught him crossing the Rio Grande River in an area near Hidalgo, Texas, according to an ICE press release. (link added- https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/fr...d-endangerment) Also with him was a 6-month-old baby, whom Guiza-Reyes was carrying as he crossed the river.

The Honduran national initially said he was the father of the baby. While at the Central Processing Center in McAllen, Texas, he even presented a Honduran birth certificate as proof of his claim.

However, during a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) examination, Guiza-Reyes admitted the child was unrelated to him and the birth certificate was fabricated, and went on to admit, according to ICE, that he intended to use the baby as a means to enter the U.S.

“Cases like this demonstrate the real danger that exists to children in this disturbing new trend,” HSI acting executive associate director Alysa Erichs said in a Thursday statement. “And while we have seen egregious cases of smugglers renting and recycling children, this case involving a six-month-old infant is a new low — and an unprecedented level of child endangerment.”

Guiza-Reyes — who had already been deported from the U.S. in 2013 — appeared in federal court May 10 and was charged with alien smuggling.

The case is the latest example of immigration fraud at the U.S.-Mexico border, an issue law enforcement officials have increasingly sounded the alarm over. Of the 562 family units HSI officials interviewed between mid-April and May 10, agents identified 95 of them as fraudulent.

“It’s very clear that the cartel and smugglers know the weaknesses in our laws. They know that family units and unaccompanied children will be released with no consequences for their illegal entries,” acting Homeland Security secretary Kevin McAleenan said in April, decrying the amount of “fake families” attempting to trick immigration officials.

The Trump administration has taken additional steps to combat immigration fraud.

HSI, which serves as DHS’s investigative force, has deployed 130 personnel to the U.S.-Mexico border. Many of the officials are forensic interview specialists, victim assistance specialists and document examiners. HSI has also completed a pilot program that involved DNA testing individuals who claimed to be in a family unit, with the agency now assessing the effectiveness of this program.

Border agents are also fingerprinting minors 14 and younger, a change from previous policy as they counter child smuggling rings.

“Our goals remain twofold: One, to protect children from being smuggled across the border by ensuring they are with their parents and not being used as pawns by individuals attempting to exploit immigration loopholes,” Erichs said. “And two, to identify and stop the criminal organizations that are generating false documents and supporting child smuggling.”

some of the same things people are having a problem with here are the same things Trump has a problem with at the border. no room, too many, not enough money/resources.

Democrats are the people that don't want to help at the border for this obvious problem, so it should be Democrat cities that take these illegal immigrants. if they reuse or object, then they should do something about the crisis at the border.

Trump officials not sending migrants to Florida after backlash
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) does not plan to send migrant families to Florida after reports about a Trump administration proposal resulted in backlash from local and state officials this week.

A CBP official told The Hill on Saturday that the administration is not looking at transporting family units to Florida "at this time" but said officials were looking at housing migrants in other areas across the country.

It was reported earlier this week that the administration planned to send hundreds of migrant families to Broward and Palm Beach counties, two Democratic strongholds in Florida that are among the state's most populous areas.

"Because of everybody's efforts, we are able to stop what had appeared to be a crisis for our community," Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said in a statement Saturday, local TV station WPTV reported.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), an ally of President Trump, was among those who pushed back on the reported plans, saying Friday that the proposal was "not acceptable" and that it might not go into effect.

"I'm going to be addressing this," he said. "This is not something that came down from the White House. This was something that came out of the agencies."

DeSantis's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill on Saturday.

A CBP official said in a statement obtained by The Hill that Immigration and Customs Enforcement aircraft were flying people from areas in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas to San Diego and Del Rio, Texas, and moving individuals by bus in other areas.
"Because of everybody's efforts, we are able to stop what had appeared to be a crisis for our community," Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

what could/would have been a crisis in Florida was prevented, but there is clearly still a crisis at the border. if there are too many of them to be detain at the border then they have to be sent somewhere else.
