Cole should probably cost more than Happ.

Over the next 2 years, I'd expect Cole and Darvish to be similar. I'd have Darvish slightly better. Darvish will cost at least 4-5 years at about $25 AAV. Cole will make maybe $20 mil total over the next 2 years.

I think Happ is good enough to be the key player in the trade going to Pittsburgh. He has 6 years control, was worth 2 wins as a rookie, was a good prospect, has legit 30 hr power and can play up the middle. He's got value. He has flaws, but so does Cole.

Happ + a couple high ceiling low level arms or even Happ + Montgomery for Cole makes sense to me.

Regarding Yelich- would Almora, Happ and Monty get that deal done?

That's only recently changed league wise the last 10-20 years, so unless a decade+ is "forever" ago, then your first premise is wrong. In fact, it's literally the same argument the people who thought that steals were the most important tool of the leadoff hitter used to make, too.

Welcome to 2017. New information is pertinent. Lineup construction has changed plenty in the last 30 years, the last 15 years and in the last 5. But you're right, why listen to new ideas?

No one is saying "hit Rizzo or Bryant behind the pitcher!". They're saying that Rizzo, or Bryant, or whomever leading off won't realistically change run output, especially over the course of a full season.
Where itís 1, 10, 20, 50 at bats, I want my best hitters getting more of them.

Wait, what? Is that a deal in place for Arrieta?

No Nightendale said earlier today the Cubs could be willing to go 4 / 110 for Jake.

Donít worry about Cole. Chances of him wearing a Cubs uniform next season are about 0 .

Yeah, I just saw it on the Cubs reddit page. That would be a good deal for Jake, the right amount of years too. If we got something done like that for Jake, Iíd love to see the contract being done in a way where he gets the least amount of money in 2019 when we make our run for Harper.

And as long as your best hitters are in the top-5, they will.

It doesn't change that the actual order of those top-5 guys realistically doesn't matter.

How much he makes in 2019 doesn't really matter. It's all AAV for tax purposes.

I could handle that deal for Jake. Doubt it happens though. Someone will likely give more years.

I don't think so. The guy is in his 30s with about 3 noteworthy seasons under his belt and red flags galore as far as decline in stuff.

    4/110 sounds about right.

4/110 makes it really hard to stay under the tax. I think I read that the Cubs have $38 mil left. That brings them down to $10.5 left. They could use another reliever. Maybe a backup catcher and 5th outfielder. They'll need at least $5 mil for in season moves.
