If you look at the schedule we don't need 5th SP till April 12 @ San Diego.

Thats very possible that we dont use a 5th starter for the first few weeks. Or Blach starts off in the pen.

Its Feb. 1st, 2018 and who would have thought all these Free Agents will all be there (not me). Since Spring Training is around the corner I thought we could discuss some players that have a chance of making the club out of ST. Here is the List of Non-Roster invitees:

    Pitchers:
    Tyler Cyr (RHP)
    Jose Flores (RHP)
    Dereck Rodriguez (RHP)
    Andrew Suarez (LHP)
    Jose Valdez (RHP)
    Madison Younginer (RHP) <----Actual name

    Catchers: (Bats/Throw)
    Trevor Brown (R)
    Justin O'Conner (R)
    Hector Sanchez (S/R)

    Infielders: (Bats/Throw)
    Orlando Calixte (R)
    Chase D'Arnaud (R)
    Alen Hanson (S/R)
    Kyle Jensen (R/L)
    Josh Rutledge (R)
*Andres Blanco (S/R) - Recently Signed

    Outfielders: (Bats/Throw)
    Steven Duggar (L/R)
    Chris Shaw (L/R)
*Gregor Blanco (L) - Recently Signed

    Current Lineup:
    RF Andrew McCutchen
    2B Joe Panik
    C Buster Posey
    1B Brandon Belt
    3B Evan Longoria
    SS Brandon Crawford
    LF Hunter Pence
    CF Austin Jackson
    P ---

    Pitching Rotation:
    1 -Madison Bumgarner (LHP)
    2 - Johnny Cueto (RHP)
    3 - Jeff Samardzija (RHP)
    4/5 - Ty Blach/Tyler Beede/Chris Stratton/Andrew Suarez (Non Roster Invitee)

Bench (Players on the 40-Man Roster):
    C Nick Hundley
    2B Miguel Gomez ---- 3B/1B Ryder Jones -------2B/3B/SS/LF Kelby Tomlinson ------ 3B/1B/ Pablo Sandoval
OF Gorkys Hernandez ----- OF Jarrett Parker ---- OF Austin Slater ----- OF Mac Williamson

Bullpen (Players on the 40-Man Roster):
    Sam Dyson (RHP)
    Julian Fernandez (RHP)
    Cory Gearrin (RHP)
    Roberto Gomez (RHP)
    Joan Gregorio (RHP)
    Tyler Herb (RHP)
    Chase Johnson (RHP)
    Pierce Johnson (RHP)
    Derek Law (RHP)
    Mark Melancon (RHP)
    Reyes Moronta (RHP)
    Steven Okert (LHP)
    Josh Osich (LHP)
    Dan Slania (RHP)
    Will Smith (LHP)
    DJ Snelten (LHP)
    Hunter Strickland (RHP)

So the question is who can be on the 25-Man Roster and who gets kicked out of the 40-Man Roster.

    My predictions:
-Steven Duggar starts out the year in AAA, at least for a month
-Gregor Blanco makes the team instead of him, and starts the season as the 4th OF/platoon with Jackson
-We start the season without a 5th starter (at least for the first time thru the rotation) to make room for a 6th bench player or 8th bullpen arm.
-Gorkys gets cut. Jarrett Parker gets traded because there is no room for him and he's out of minor league options.
-Andrew Suarez makes the major league roster and Tyler Beede does not

I think Giants would prefer to keep Jarrett as a bench option. He has proven to be an ok option off the bench with some pop.

our bench will likely be: hundley, parker, kelby, pablo, blanco/jackson
pen: melancon, okert/osich, dyson, strick, law, gearin, blach, moronto or whatever his name is. That's a pretty bad bullpen.

    rotation: bum, cueto, shark, stratton
lineup: pence, panik, cutch, posey, longo, belt, craw, jackson/blanco

If Smith is ready by April 12th then he takes Okert/ Osich spot and Blach moves back into rotation. Moronto goes back to AAA or if he is performing then hopefully Gearrin goes bye bye.

I can see some of those happening, however, I think they'd rather let Suarez stay in AAA and get consistent innings.

I think it would be unwise for the Giants to give Parker a bench spot over Austin Slater, who clearly is a more promising player (and a few years younger). But then again, I believe that Slater has a minor league option and Parker is out of options, so you may be right.

I think Panda will make the team, simply because the Giants still believe he can be a super good pitch-hitter. I think they'll also carry a 5th outfielder, either Parker or Slater or Gorkys.

Lincecum4CY, are you saying there is a chance that Smith will be ready by the 12th? Somehow, I got the impression he would be out longer. Hope this is true.

I'm expecting big things from Random Reliever this year.
