    Serena Williams win Australian Open

Serena thanks 'inspiring' Venus after historic victory

Serena Williams expressed her gratitude to her "inspiring" older sister after beating Venus in the Australian Open final to claim a historic 23rd grand slam title.

Venus, who was playing in her first major final since 2009, spoke of her pride after seeing her sister make history from the other side of the net.

American women's tennis star Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus Williams in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) Saturday to win this year's Australian Open in Melbourne.

With the victory, the 35-year-old Williams powered her way into the record books with 23 Grand Slam titles, surpassing German Steffi Graf as winner of the most Grand Slams since the beginning of the Open era in 1968, when professional and amateur players competed in the same events.

Serena Williams embraces her sister after winning her women's singles final match against Venus Williams.
