Yep. It was all bad timing. That window is incredibly small. If it weren't, we would see this type of injury with much greater frequency, not only in contact sports like Football, Hockey, Lacrosse but it would be prevalent in boxing and MMA.

It's happened one time before in football and that was 1971. It happened recently in hockey when the guy got hit with the puck. It's good the NFL has learned and taken safety measure to a much higher level.
Yep. 20 millisecond window for the R to T phenomenon. (If that's what this is), also known as Commotio Cordis.

My wife said it looks like it could be that senario, but it's impossible to really make that determination based on a quick video. She is an RN in a CTICU CC step-down unit.

From my limited understanding, there is roughly a 55-60% chance of survival these days with this situation. Hopefully his is much higher considering the quick response by the field medical staff. Keeping his blood pumping with the chest compressions, getting him set up with intubation and continuing keeping the oxygen flowing to the lungs with this method to help keep oxygen to the brain and other organs should hopefully raise the odds of survival.

I don't think he's a bust. I think he just needs the right motivation to pick himself up & play harder.

That's crazy bad luck. Think of the literally millions, of hits taken over the last 50 years and this is the only time it's happened. I actually did a very rough break down. If 1 team plays 100 plays a game for 16 games. That is on the very minimum, 1600 hits a year. Multiply that by 32 and we get 51,200 total hits per year. Times 50 is 2,560,000 hits over 50 years. That is an incredibly conservative number only factoring in 1 hit per play when in reality, almost every single player makes contact with another, every play, so you could likely multiply that number by 10 based on all players on the field. It's ****ing nuts.

It is utterly heartbreaking. I am so glad I was not watching the game and haven't looked at the video.
I fear the longer he's critical, the worse it is. I am hoping he is awake and coherent and his family and the league are just giving him plenty of time to fully regain his thoughts.

A Cornell lacrosse player died of that a many years back. They implemented a rule that all players have chest guards.
They hockey player was lucky. I. hope this kid is.

It might be time to end football, boxing, and any other barbaric sport as it has become way too dangerous. The last time I saw this happen was with Stingley of the Patriots back in the late 70s when he was paralyzed on the field. I was a kid when I saw that and they put him on a stretcher and continued to play the game like nothing had happen.

As long as it brings in money, the NFL isn't going anywhere. To be fair to the situation, the hit that caused his cardiac arrest was a complete fluke. I read somewhere the odds of it happening were 1 in 200 million. The NFL just needs to do a much better job with player safety and there's zero excuse not to. They make 20 billion dollars a year in revenue. There are certain things that are not going away like Thursday night, Saturday night, Monday night football and the 17 game schedule but there are ways to make the game safer. The problem is Goodell is a piece of human **** who is only worried about money. Even the image of the NFL takes a backseat to the almighty dollar. That's why they continually make poor decisions in respect to how they handle any negative controversies.

    Mush, you'd have to end:
    Hockey
    Lacrosse
    Volleyball
    Field soggy
    Baseball
    Softball
    Basketball
    Soccer
    Tennis

It was not anything barbaric that caused it. Someone's friend good jokingly punch them in the chest a bit too hard and it could kill them

NFL needs to play that Bengals/Bills game. There are too many factors involved. They have that off week prior to the Super Bowl. They just need to push the playoffs back a week. Just imagine Bill fan if their team has to play in KC in the AFC Championship game? Plus you have the Bengals and Ravens involved as well. A lot of deciding factors in that Bills/Bengals game. If they are worried about Damar then just end the season NOW!

Regarding Damar: He's still in critical condition, however, there might be some positive news. The NFL network mentioned yesterday that there has been some discussion with Damar's family and evidently as of two days ago, the respirator was providing 100% of his breathing, but yesterday, it was down to 50%. Hopefully today it will be needed even less and soon the lungs will function on their own.

Regarding the NFL schedule, I feel that the Bills and Bengals should play on Wild Card weekend (maybe as a stand alone game on Saturday) and the AFC have the weekend off with the NFC playing its games on Sunday. Then the following week, the NFC is off with the AFC playing its Wild Card weekend. This pushes the conference Championships into the bye week prior to the Super Bowl, but doesn't effect the actual Super Bowl date. It seems to me to be the logical choice, but it might hurt whatever media events the NFL wants to do the week before. Alternatively, you would have to squeeze three games into 2 weeks in the AFC, perhaps having the Bills and Bengals play Thursday night next week and postponing their Wild Card games past Sunday. The one thing that would never happen is moving the Super Bowl back a week, since that is planned years in advance plus no-one wants to play it on President's Day weekend.

Holy crap, I only factored in the NFL. If you take into account every college and high school game, that number is likely in the billions of hits

    NFL is a joke.

The Bills got screwed. If they have to play KC in Arrowhead Stadium for the AFC Championship game how fair is that? That Bills/Bengals game was huge for deciding seedings. And the NFL just waves it off. There was an off week before the Super Bowl. All they had to do was push the playoffs back a week. A lot was at stake and the NFL just doesn’t care. Just imagine Yankee fan if they couldn’t play a Game 162 and ended being a 1/2 game out of 1st place in the East with Boston the top team but the Yankees had the tiebreaker?

There is an off week before Super Bowl. You could have just pushed all playoffs back a week. The NFL is a joke. All of Professional sports is a joke. Even college is as well. Who in the hell cares about these stupid bowl games anymore with all of the best players not playing? The NBA is the worst of the bunch with their load management BS. And that blame goes to Greg Popovich who started that bullcrap. Kid look up to these NBA stars and when their old man takes him or her to a game they want to see those particular players on the court playing not in street clothes resting.

I love how ESPN is promoting the College National Championship game by saying

    The Greatest Story ever told….

This will be a snoozer after 1st quarter

    Georgia 21
    TCU 0

    Final

    Georgia 55
TCU 13 ———and just from garbage points….
