Paul Guenther hired as a senior defensive assistant. He worked with Zim in Cincy for 6 years and was recently the Raiders DC. Same title that Dom Capers had last year.

This is interesting. Does this mean Reiff will be back next year? Is this just a nice gesture by the organization? Are they trying to butter him up a bit before asking him to renegotiate his contract again? I'm curious to see where this goes.

Boy I'm just not sure what they do and honestly I'll be fine with whichever decision they decide. On one hand you are a team that already struggles with iOL, do you want to worry about LT too? I know that's why we drafted Cleveland and while I expect him over there eventually, what we do with Reiff will tell us either way.
Does anyone think Cleveland can come in and perform at or above Reiff? If the answer is yes then you probably move to make that cut. If I were the GM, I would probably lean on cutting him and having Cleveland take his place (of course this depends on what the coaches tell me and believe as well). Reiff has been solid but he's still average...could we use some of the $$ to sign a solid Guard? Can't wait to find out!
There is some speculation that we may see a different philosophy with our DB scheme. The new DB coach talks a lot about quarters defense. Guenther, rans a lot of quarters, with much better success than what the Vikings did last year.
I'm not real familiar with what this actually means lol but I like that we could be bringing a new look and wrinkle. Top 10 defense next year is inevitable.
gotta love 'referential' treatment
There is no doubt, if healthy, this defense will be in that top 10-15 range imo. This is also taking into account that Pierce comes into camp in shape, which he has struggled with in the past. But I've read that he has taking up CrossFit? this offseason to help with his conditioning. If he comes into camp in one of the best shapes he will have a monster year for us. Just having him and Hunter will make average guys like Watts and Ifedi look that much better.
Then you throw in the development of Dantzler and Gladney.
A guy did the redraft and had Jefferson at #3 and Dantzler at like top 15, can't remember exactly, might have been 10 overall.
KYLE RUDOLPH
https://www.nbcsports.com/edge/footb...1/kyle-rudolphKyle Rudolph said he wouldn't take a pay cut for the same role he had in 2020.
Rudolph shared on the Unrestricted with Ben Leber Podcast that he hasn't been happy with his usage over the last two seasons. Rudolph had a career-low one receiving touchdown last season and watched his target share drop in favor of Irv Smith, Adam Thielen, and Justin Jefferson. Heading into his age-32 season, Rudolph feels like he can contribute more as a receiver instead of falling into the blocking and mentor role. The Vikings and Rudolph may divorce this offseason. A pre-June 1 trade or release would save Minnesota $5.0 million against the cap but comes with $4.4 million in dead money. If Rudolph is let go, Irv Smith would become a more attractive TE2. He was the TE22 per game as a second-year pro.
Old news but still important. I expect Rudy to get the ax

A few nuggets from Doogie:
Vikings haven’t called yet on any FA’s (guys like Easton or Short who were cut recently)
No trade calls made on Orlando Brown
Doesn’t think Reiff is going anywhere but also doesn’t think he’ll be playing under his current salary. A contract extension is possible
Barr is anti any sort of restructure
Vikings will talk to Harrison Smith about an extension
Rudy expected to be cut

Well, same for Barr....restructure or bu bye...at this point we wish he'd not backed out on the Jets
gotta love 'referential' treatment
Honestly nothing there is a surprise. There is no way we should be serious about Brown. Yes he is good, but we would have to give up a lot and also pay him.
Barr restructure isn't surprise either. His cap hit is high but I just don't think we'll move on from his this season. Maybe next year when that cap hit is $17 million.
Makes a lot of sense to extend Smith as well. Give him a 3 year deal.
Rudy officially cut

Best of luck to Rudy. It was inevitable since we have Irv and Gronklin. Hopefully, he has a shot and winning a chip.
I don't get attached to players but it doesn't take away the great career on and off the field that he did for the state of MN. It was the right move that we all knew was coming. I was actually ready to move on from him several years ago. He can still be a very good TE2 for someone and is one hell of a reliable target.
