The devil's advocate part is: We're not gonna win. Not with this roster, not with that roster. If we can't win now, when can we win? Well, the future of course, and what better to build for the future than a lottery pick?

You like bringing up the financials of how the aging regressing Blake contract looks better than the combination of the Harris/Bradley contracts, but you tend to neglect the lottery pick.

I'm all for looking at the finances, but I'm also all for wins. We can't win now, but maybe we can win later, and by removing a lotto pick it takes "later" and makes it "even later"

I don't disagree with the lottery pick theory. But given it was at 12, the odds of landing someone that will change the franchise is very limited. Sure, you can go back and pick guys lottery and non-lottery that may not have changed the franchise, but did become franchise impact players. Klay. Draymond. Others.

The point most people don't realize when making that argument (not saying you are) is: Yes, this or that guy was a changer. But they were drafted #9, #13, #27, etc. Yeah, it's easy to go back and find guys litterd throughout the draft that fit that criteria. But the harder exercise (unless you're talking 30-40 drafts) is find that franchise changing player at that specific draft slot. For fun, here they are:

    Number 12

    Year Player School/Country – Team

2017 Luke Kennard, Duke – Detroit Pistons
2016 Taurean Prince, Baylor – Utah Jazz
2015 Trey Lyles, Kentucky – Utah Jazz
2014 Dario Saric, Croatia – Orlando Magic
2013 Steven Adams, Pittsburgh – Oklahoma City Thunder
2012 Jeremy Lamb, Connecticut – Houston Rockets
2011 Alec Burks, Colorado – Utah Jazz
2010 Xavier Henry, Kansas – Memphis Grizzlies

    2000’s

2009 Gerald Henderson, Duke – Charlotte Bobcats
2008 Jason Thompson, Rider – Sacramento Kings
2007 Thaddeus Young, Georgia Tech – New Orleans Hornets
2006 Hilton Armstrong, Connecticut – New Orleans Hornets
2005 Yaroslav Korolev, CSKA Moscow – L.A. Clippers
2004 Robert Swift, Bakersfield HS (Calif.) – Seattle Supersonics
2003 Nick Collison, Kansas – Seattle Supersonics
2002 Melvin Ely, Fresno State – L.A. Clippers
2001 Vladimir Radmanovic, Serbia & Montenegro – Seattle Supersonics
2000 Etan Thomas, Syracuse – Dallas Mavericks

    1990’s

1999 Aleksandar Radojevic, Barton County CC – Toronto Raptors
1998 Michael Doleac, Utah – Orlando Magic
1997 Austin Croshere, Providence – Indiana Pacers
1996 Vitaly Potapenko, Wright State – Cleveland Cavaliers
1995 Cherokee Parks, Duke – Dallas Mavericks
1994 Khalid Reeves, Arizona – Miami HEAT
1993 George Lynch, North Carolina – L.A. Lakers
1992 Harold Miner, USC – Miami HEAT
1991 Greg Anthony, UNLV – New York Knicks
1990 Alec Kessler, Georgia – Houston Rockets

There's contributors on that list, but a quick glance for me didn't produce: I'd trade my left arm for that dude. The corollary argument is we'd suck for several years and could get continuing lottery picks an eventually hit it big. I'd rather play mega-millions.

Additionally, as you allude to, finances are a very, very big part of today's landscape. And will only impact more, IMHO, until the next CBA. I do think we can "win" with this roster. I'm looking at 45-50 wins - which obviously assumes health and Stanley/Luke/Henry making advances. It's those guys (getting better with still an upside) plus a vet that you can flip for someone to join Blake/Dre' and I assume Jackson unless Brown/Thomas blow up - for a mid-star to have a puncher's chance.

Is this team going to win 60 games? Absolutely not. Should they win 50 with a possible first round at home and a puncher's chance in round two? Yes - given it's the east. If you take current CW in that GS will win the next 4 of 5 regardless - all else being equal - then having Blake/Dre' - Reggie and putting on an entertaining team with a puncher's chance - hoping to hit the lottery really doesn't make any sense financially.

And I'm not a sammy spartan guy either. Go Blue !!

another interesting fact about the #12 pick:

no "slotted" #12 pick has ever landed a top 3 lotto win

10-14 has only hit the lotto once and that was the #13 slot hitting #3 lotto

the ninth slot has somehow landed #1 twice

I can't find which teams jumped from 9 to 1 but it wouldn't surprise me if both were Cleveland

also, that's since '93 so Shaq n Penny don't count

I caught a blurb in a Sports Illustrated article from last year that made me wonder:

It was a "what if?" article. Goes like this:

Alternate Universe: Pistons nab Carmelo Anthony (as some projected) over Darko Milicic in '03. New Ending: Detroit still wins '04 Finals, with 'Melo coming off the bench. He emerges in '05 as Pistons beat Spurs in Final Game 7. Two years later Kobe Bryant doesn't veto trade to Detroit; era's first superteam forms.

    Chauncey
    Kobe
    Melo
    Sheed
    Ben

    not bad

Melo would’ve had a way better career too. Playing with those guys would have made him a better professional and a winner overall.

Makes you wonder if Detroit would've been a serious player in LeBron's OG "Decision" if we had Melo and racked up a few rings

anyone remember when there was an actual rumor about Lebron joining the Pisrons?

He could've been the original snake

The Pistons called me today, thought it was for a job...turned out it was them trying to sell me their special a la carte ticket package
