How Many "True" Aces are There in MLB?

Every team has a #1 starter, but people have different opinions on who in baseball are considered to be true 'ace' caliber pitchers. So, how many true aces are there is baseball (can also include pitchers that are a team's #2 or even #3 but are ace caliber pitchers)? As of now, I would say

    Sabathia
    Price
    Verlander
    Weaver
    King Felix
    Strasburg
    Halladay
    Lee
    Hamels
    Cueto
    Kershaw
    Cain
    Lincecum

    (13)

    30.

there are exactly 30 aces in baseball.

We have had this discussion several times.

The issue with the term 'aces' is that the ace is defined as literally, 'the best pitcher on a teams pitching staff'

so one guy. Roy halladay, Justin Verlander, Stephen Strasburg, Scott Diamond.

There are 30 aces in baseball.

Cliff Lee is not an ace, nor is Madison Bumgarner or Cole Hamels.

But Scott Diamond, Jeff Samardzja, and Luke Hochevar are.

If you want to use a different term to describe the best pitchers in baseball, or the 30 best pitchers in baseball, ace is no the term you want to use.

Neither Lincecum or Lee are pitching well enough to be considered aces.

I disagree, not every team has an "ace"....an "ace" is a legit TORP pitcher and just because every team has a TORP, doesnt mean that pitcher is an "ace"

every team has a number one, not every team has as ace.

I am going by the literal definition.

    By Meriam-Webster.

I didn't make it up, and I don't know why people change the term to fit whatever subjective meaning they want to define it with.

How is naming the 13 'best' pitchers as aces? So the 14th best isn't?

Ace, as defined, is the best pitcher on a teams pitching staff. I didn't write the term's definition. But that is what it is.

So Scott Diamond is, Cliff Lee is not

Obviously Cliff Lee is a better pitcher than Scott Diamond, and if he was on the Twins, he would easily be their ace. But that isn't what the term 'ace' means.

    Agree with Jeffy.

Its why you always say "Ace of the staff" never say "These guys are Aces".

In baseball, an ace is the best starting pitcher of any team
    http://mw4.merriam-webster.com/wdictionary/ace[1]

b : the best pitcher on a baseball team <the ace of the staff>

I have no idea why people have evolved the definition to mean anything other than what it literally means.

There are 30 teams in baseball, there are 30 aces in baseball.

It doesn't mean they are the 30 best pitchers in baseball.
