Cardinals are using Edman like what the Cardinals should have done with Carpenter 4-5 season ago as that super utility Ben Zobrist guy who gets 5 starts a week playing different positions.

Ultimately, Edman might only equate to aversion of Aaron Miles or Skip Schumaker but every team needs that player.

    Tommy Edman stats to note....

    vs. righties.... .259/.291/.406
    vs. lefties.... .333/.362/.545

Even if he isn't the long term answer, he appears very suited to be a super-sub/platoon player. Since he had his hot stretch in August, I would say he deserves to get the majority of the starts. But, in 21 AB's in September... Carp has had a .916 OPS. If he keeps hitting the ball... he will be taking his job back.

So it appears that him coming off the bench and spot starting is better than him playing everyday right now..

Maybe so. Easing him back isn't a bad idea at all. I think if the production stays the same, you increase his games started a little at a time.

Offensively, they are about equal, and Edman has a very small advantage defensively, and a decent advantage with base running (Edman has been one of the better base runners in baseball)

In total, over the course of a full season

Edman would save about 7 runs defensively at third
Edman would create about 10 additional runs with base running
Edman would create about 80 runs with his bat

Carpenter would save about 2 runs defensively at third
Carpenter would be neutral in base running
Carpenter would create about 77 runs with his bat

That's based on extrapolating this season into a full seasons worth.

Their bats are basically the same, but Edman can create about 15 additional runs with his defense and base running.

But this also ignores the player Carpenter has been since he returned from injury (his former self basically).

Edman should probably still start, but it's not a huge spread between the two.

It's just as likely that Carpenter is better playing more rested as the narrative that he's better now and away from his nagging injuries. Either narrative fits depending what you want.

Either way, the Carpenter we've seen over the last 30 days is significantly better than anything Tommy Edman can give us.

Then keep carp on the bench and be the PH off of it.

So... have someone making 20 mil... hitting the ball really well, come off the bench?

It is, and should be... a competition. If one is out performing the other, they should get more PT.

    Exactly

Fortunately, Edman has been hitting great, so he isn't the guy that should be sitting for him, DeJong probably is.

Idc what hes making. He hasn't earned it this year to get playing time at this point

I'd argue that you do care what he's making, because you use that as your argument for being justifiably frustrated with him.

Play wise, only. He's 8th in fWAR and 8th in wRC+. Worth a starting role, but not to the hit in the top of the lineup, but rather the back end.
