For Stupidity above and beyond the call of duty

N.B.A. Takes a Look at Jersey Sponsorship
    By RICHARD SANDOMIR
    Published: April 17, 2012

Six mannequin torsos — three wearing Chicago Bulls jerseys and three with Boston Celtics jerseys — sat on tables in front of N.B.A. owners in a meeting room at the St. Regis hotel in Manhattan.

The jerseys were unlike any that the Bulls and the Celtics wear. All had a corporate name or logo — and were sartorial harbingers of the N.B.A.’s future.

The last thing the NBA needs is more commercialism. I thought they just shortened the season as a way to settle out their financial issues.

They then clearly let greed get the best of them so that we can we can watch a Rose-less Bulls play a Kobe-less Lakers since they stacked the season so brutally that almost every top-level team is missing one of their stars.

I think that that the NBA "brain trust" just assumes that fans are idiots... The last thing that I want to see is my team running up and down the court branded like some refugees from a college bowl game.

The stupid thing is pretending this is going to stop anyone watching. It isn't. You claim it is, just like everyone claimed nobody would watch after the lockout, but that's just such a stupidly hollow threat.

This wouldn't cost the owners anything, and would make them significant money. I don't like it either, but for them it's a winner.

This was a major letdown, I wholly expected some sort of bone headed play from JaVale McGee upon reading the title of this thread.

As for logos on jerseys - I could care less as long as the owners agree to split the profits equally.

The really stupid thing, is we as fans could actually squash this.

But complacency and laziness will win out, like they always do. Modern world is lame like that.

Boycott not the answer; parody is...

I agree that boycotts are not the answer. You are right to say that no one will stop watching any sport over over-commercialization. But you might be able to embarass the league into not doing it. You know, have a contest with the dumbest possible logos, put it on a blog, link to the league sites, a little ad-busting theater. What would happen if fans went to game with shirts parodying the ads. All sorts of possibilities for online (and off) guerilla theater.

Who cares? The advertising profits will outweigh the jersey sale loses.

It works for the epl, why not other sports?

Yet, somehow, Messi's "tacky ***" Barcelona jersey that has "Unicef" across is probably the highest selling jersey in the world in all of sports.
