If our pen looks remotely like that then Doubront will be in Pawtucket as the FO prefers. They won't waste an option year and significant development time with him getting spotty 6th and 7th inning duties when they view him as a long term starter.

Who really cares what happens to them? Do you think they are quality pitchers?

Yeah, I expect him to be injury/Matsuzaka insurance. The Red Sox will call him up as a starter and if he does well, they'll find a way to keep him in the rotation. Late in the season, they might move him back to the bullpen to get some use out of him in the playoffs but they aren't going to use up an option, a year of his team control and his development to use him as a lefty specialist. We have plenty of guys in our bullpen who are able to get both righties and lefties out.

Beimel is not nearly as good as Fuentes. He's like a Javier Lopez type pitcher, while Fuentes has proven to be a legitimate reliever who can get both righties and lefties out. His K rate is not really in decline, it's been sort of all over the place from 8-12 K/9 inn his whole career. He's still good.

That being said, I think 3 years for BF is a little excessive as well. It's easier to release Beimel if he blows.

Let's just see on Beimel, shall we?

    2007 vs RHB: PA: 173 Slash: .294/.366/.379 sOPS+ 089
    2007 vs LHB: PA: 108 Slash: .240/.250/.250 sOPS+ 039

    2008 vs RHB: PA: 114 Slash: .263/.363/.337 sOPS+ 109
    2008 vs LHB: PA: 100 Slash: .278/.330/.311 sOPS+ 091

    2009 vs RHB: PA: 135 Slash: .282/.348/.393 sOPS+ 098
    2009 vs LHB: PA: 105 Slash: .258/.297/.484 sOPS+ 103

    2010 vs RHB: PA: 086 Slash: .329/.388/.474 sOPS+ 132
    2010 vs LHB: PA: 102 Slash: .221/.275/.379 sOPS+ 090

So, Beimel has more appearances against righties the last 4 years then lefties - so he's no lefty only specialist. He's averaged ~104 OPS given up to righties during these years with only '10 not being that great (including a decline in K/9).

    FG WAR $ since 2007:

    JB: $03.8, $03.2, $01.4, $00.3
    BF: $03.0, $11.0, $01.5, $01.5

So, outside of the monumental 2008 Fuentes season, they've been about equal these past four years. Pretty interesting when you consider Fuentes was paid $9M last year and Beimel made $1M.

Fuentes isn't coming to sit in a group with two other proto closers waiting for Pap to explode in a contract year. Beimel makes more sense, although I don't we'll see him either.

Also, Beimel hasn't laid an egg since before 2005 unlike Lopez who laid a big fat one for us in 2009.

Wouldn't mind having Fuentes but not on a 3-year deal. Give him a 2 year maximum deal, if he doesn't take that then don't sign him.
With the deepest of regrets I am announcing that I will be leaving Pro Sports Daily. No reason in particular but wanted to thank everyone for a great 6 years here. Lots of great discussion and good poll series as well. Also fun re-drafts. Best of luck to you all in the future.
