Gary Payton filing his retirement papers

Former NBA superstar point guard Gary Payton is getting ready to make his retirement from the league official. Payton did not play in 2007-08, never really came close, after playing his final two seasons with the Miami HEAT.

Payton's best years came with the Seattle SuperSonics, leading them to an NBA Finals appearance with Shawn Kemp in 1996, where they fell to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

Payton played 11 and a half seasons in Seattle, half a season in Milwaukee after being traded at the deadline with Desmond Mason for Ray Allen, one year with the Los Angeles Lakers (another Finals appearance in 2004), and one year with the Boston Celtics before winning a ring in Miami in 2006 with Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade.

Payton "The Glove" to his fans was a national player of year while at Oregon State University and was drafted second overall by the Sonics in 1990. He was named to nine All-Star teams, won the league's Defensive Player of the Year award in 1996, was named to nine All-Defensive first teams, two All-NBA first teams, and finished his career near the top in many statistical categories third overall in steals, seventh in assists, and 27th in points.

Once Payton files his retirement papers, he will be eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2013 (six years after his final NBA game). Without a doubt, Payton is a first ballot Hall of Famer, so Payton fans might want to start thinking about a trip to Springfield, Massachusetts for September of that year.

Since leaving the NBA spotlight Payton has been busy raising his three children in Las Vegas. He most recently was spotted supporting the protests in Seattle against the Sonics leaving town for Oklahoma City.

Payton is a really great player. Top 10 PG All-Time, too bad he had to share the decade with Jordan.
