    A Look Into The Future

It's always fun, as a baseball/sports fan, to look ahead and see what the future could potentially hold. So I'll go one year into the future, and look into the next offseason, naming off only some of the Free Agents for next winter. I name only some because I'd rather not discuss players that are nothing more than bench players, but guys that will likely be able to contribute to a team the following season.

NOTE: I have taken some names from other sites, so it may not be 110% up to date with some of the one year signings in the last few weeks.

So lets discuss some of the "best" from the Free Agent list. I'll give a few questions, and you can decide whether you want to use this as an index for replying:

    1) Of the FA's, which do you want your team to sign the most?
    2) Who is most likely to be most overpaid?
    3) Who on that list are you preying your team does NOT sign?
    4) Who on this list do you believe will retire?
    5) Who on that list will spend 2008 on your team, and do you want them re-signed, or no?

Great thread, been tried before, but the questions at the end sets this one apart. Very clear, and well done... No, I will begin with question 5, it's the easiest I guess...

C Jason Varitek: I DO want to re-sign him. I am nervous though. He will always be an asset to the Red Sox, but is he going to continue to be worth the money for his on-field play? Not for 4 more years, 3 even? Probably not. That is the term he will command though. I was critical of the Posada signing. It would be hypocritical to not criticize the V-Tek signing that is sure to come. Do love the guy though.

1B Casey: By most accounts he is the most popular guy in baseball practically. I'm not getting the chance to have a beer with him, though, so I will have to reserve judgment on whether I want him re-signed I guess. Been looking good so far though.

    LF Manny: Obviously...

Pitchers: Schilling: I didn't see schilling, but I can't see making that signing again. Thanks for the memories.

I think that's it... There was probably a reliever or two in there.

As far as guys to sign, all I can say is Pitching Pitching Pitching. I hope the Yanks spend their wad on Tex (which they may). C.C. would be great. Lackey, Benson (am I thinking of the right one here?) D-Lowe, Penny, Sheets would all make me happy. Relievers? Dan Wheeler? Wood? I don't know. I stayed away from the closer types because, they will want tons of money and want to close. K-Rod would be great but... Okay. I'm tired now. Maybe I will hit the other questions later.

    1) Of the FA's, which do you want your team to sign the most?
I wouldnt mind seeing Juan Rincon if he can get back to his 03-06 years. If Wakefied and Schilling are both gone I wouldnt mind seeing Lowe brought back. Id like CC but for the wad of cash he'll want. Tex would be nice, if we had room, but he's not a need right now. Mark Prior also.

    2) Who is most likely to be most overpaid?
All of them. But Borowski, K-Rod, Crawford, O Cabrera, Varitek, Crede, Burrell, Lidge

    3) Who on that list are you preying your team does NOT sign?
    Borowski and Farnsworthless

    4) Who on this list do you believe will retire?
Maddux, Pettite, La Duca, Grudzielanek, Vizquel

    5) Who on that list will spend 2008 on your team, and do you want them re-signed, or no?

Tek, Casey, Timlin depending on his season

    1) Of the FA's, which do you want your team to sign the most?
-C.C. Sabathia, but he's likely to cost an arm and a leg.

    2) Who is most likely to be most overpaid?
-Again, C.C. Sabathia. He'll get a monster contract even if he doesn't pitch well this season. It's all about potential.

    3) Who on that list are you preying your team does NOT sign?
-Joe Borowski, Eric Gagne (Oh my god..), Kyle Farnsworth, and the entire list of Catchers outside of Varitek.

    4) Who on this list do you believe will retire?
-Plenty of guys. Luis Gonzalez, Andy Pettitte, Moises Alou, Brian Giles.

    5) Who on that list will spend 2008 on your team, and do you want them re-signed, or no?
-Tek - I'd like him back
-Casey - I'd like him back, but bench players get turned over often.
-Timlin - Probably going to retire.

I would like my team to re sign CC Sabathia & try to bring in Jason Isringhausen on a 2 year deal.

    2) Who is most likely to be most overpaid?
    CC Sabathia & Oliver Perez.

    3) Who on that list are you preying your team does NOT sign?
Jason Micahels, Joe Borowski, and Todd Jones.

    4) Who on this list do you believe will retire?
Tom Glavine, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Jamie Moyer, Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte, Woody Williams, Tom Gordon, Jim Edmonds, Luis Gonzalez, Cliff Floyd, Omar Vizquel, & Jeff Kent.

    5) Who on that list will spend 2008 on your team, and do you want them re-signed, or no?
I want Jason Michaels & Joe Borowski to be gone. I would like to retain Sabathia for $90-95 million over 5 years. And I am open to retaining Casey Blake, depending on his asking price & the other viable options available at 3B.

    1. CC Sabathia. Vladimir Guerrero actually, but I'll bet my life they use his option.

    2. All the closers, Orlando Cabrera

    3. Joe Borowski

    4. Vizquel, Alou, Glavine, Hampton, Maddux, Moyer, Rogers (I thought he'd leave after 2005), Timlin

    5. Varitek: I'd like him back. Casey: See Varitek. Timlin: No.

Thanks to DeeMan for designing this sig.

Well, I think the "Big 4" of this free agent class are Francisco Rodriguez, CC Sabathia, Mark Texiera and Ben Sheets. You have to assume all three will get anywhere between 13-16+ million per season. I think there will be some team that will GROSSLY overpay for Oliver Perez. I just don't think he is as good as advertised, but the fact that he is left handed helps his cause.

I also think someone will overpay tremendously for Mark Texiera.

If there was one guy on this list, if this is a true list, that I would be going after hard would be Carl Crawford. He hits for a solid average, gives you reasonable HR's, solid RBI's, stolen bases, and decent defense.

I think when you look at the majority of this list, there are A LOT of people who would be considered "Quick fixes." I think you will see a bunch of deals that aren't any more than 2 or 3 years.

    1) Of the FA's, which do you want your team to sign the most?
K-Rod first and foremost. I also like Derek Lowe, Orlando Cabrera, and Rafael Furcal.

    2) Who is most likely to be most overpaid?
    CC

    3) Who on that list are you preying your team does NOT sign?
    Todd Jones

    4) Who on this list do you believe will retire?
Tom Glavine, Jamie Moyer, Woody Williams, Jim Edmonds, Cliff Floyd, Omar Vizquel

    5) Who on that list will spend 2008 on your team, and do you want them re-signed, or no?
Renteria has a shot at coming back, and I like the guy. Maybe Pudge if he plays well enough or Kenny if he wants another crack at a ring; wouldn't mind either coming back though I see better options.
