SS Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K
He was scorching hot at this level dating back to last season. Now he has run into a bit of an inevitable slump (1-for-17). Baseball is the most humbling sport on the planet.
3B Miguel Andujar: 1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
I still think he can be a quality MLB hitter again, though some may disagree. Regardless, there is no room on the Yankees’ roster and there likely won’t ever be.

1B Ronald Guzman: 1-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
Guzman has two HR and a double over his last three games. Other than beating up on the Yankees (including a 3 HR game), he hasn’t done much in MLB – but I think he provides solid 1B/DH depth.

I think they will keep Waldi at AA for a bit but if Pereira keeps this up another 2 weeks, do they bump him?

Scranton Railriders (4-5)

The game against Norfolk was postponed. They will play two on Easter Sunday. Norfolk has worn down the Scranton pitching staff the past three days, so this postponement is not a terrible thing for the Railriders. They may need to bring up a reinforcement from Somerset though. We’ll see.

Somerset Patriots (5-3) (Drained Erie, 6-0)

DH Anthony Volpe: 1-for-3, 2B (2), RBI, 2 RS, BB, SB (1)
A much-needed solid effort for Volpe. In case you forget (and how could you?), he stole 33 bases in 42 attempts in 2021. Some of that was due to rules designed to increase stolen bases, but he has the speed to steal some bags in MLB whenever he gets there.

RF Elijah Dunham: 1-for-2, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS, 2 BB, K

8-for-27 (2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 5 R, 3 BB, 10 K). He has hit safely in six of seven games.

Chaparro hit 15 HR in 2021 (101 games), only two less than he hit between 2017-2019 combined (163 games).

First game of 2022. Nelson hit .246/.319/.359 in 310 PA for Hudson Valley last season (13 doubles, 6 HR, 16 SB). He was acquired from the Marlins in 2020 for LHP Stephen Tarpley.

LHP Ken Waldichuk: (W, 2-0) 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K
Waldichuk also tossed five scoreless in his first start. Remember that he started 2021 with 30.2 scoreless innings down in Hudson Valley.

Five baserunners were easily wiped away with five strikeouts. He has nine strikeouts in 4.1 IP thus far this season.

Hudson Valley Renegades (4-4) (Lost to Rome, 3-2)

SS Trey Sweeney: 1-for-4, RBI, 3 K
Left the game due to some sort of injury after his RBI single. Before you panic: Nobody is taking a risk with a prospect at the slightest hint of injury. Hopefully, it is nothing serious.
PR/3B Tyler Hardman: 0-for-0
CF Everson Pereira: 2-for-4, 2 K
.393/.514/.607 in 35 PA. I don’t typically do triple slashes this early into the season, but come on – this one deserves recognition. He has reached base safely in all seven games this season. He has compiled four multi-hit games.
C Austin Wells: 0-for-4, 4 K
It has been a tough start for Wells (4-for-27, 2 doubles, 4 RBI, 5 BB, 10 K). A bit surprising since he hit well upon being promoted here last season (.274/.376/.473 in 170 PA). We’ll just chalk this up to an early-season slump.
2B/SS Cooper Bowman: 0-for-3, BB
DH T.J. Rumfield: 1-for-4, 2B (4), 2 K
6-game hitting streak. 12-for-30 (.400) on the season (12-for-25 since an 0-for-5 Opening Day). Even though he is a college bat drafted in 2021, Rumfield is only 21 years old (22 in May). While Andres Chaparro is in Double-A, there will be room for him to get ABs up in Somerset when they deem him ready.

IMO, the only reason to keep Waldi in AA is because there really isn't a spot for him in the AAA rotation. Especially when they MLB roster goes down to 26, because they will likely send Schmidt back down. Waldi already spent the majority of last yr in AA and was pretty dominate, i'm not sure what he has left to prove at that level.

If Pereira keeps this up for another 2 weeks you would have to think they would bump him up. He's hitting close to .400 and finished last yr at this same level. I think they keep him at that level for another month but that about it. He's really come on huge since almost being traded for Gallo

Great to see Waldichuk off to this kind of start, especially with Gil and Garcia off to slow starts, and Medina still building back up after whatever happened to him this offseason. So far Wesneski, Schmidt, Krook, Sears, Waldichuk, have caught my attention. Medina, Gil, and Garcia are behind but it's early.

No word yet on Trey Sweeney, who left last night’s game after a single. He did not play today.

Back-to-back games with an HR. His triple slash: .367/.387/.600 in 31 PA. This is the 22-year-old’s first exposure at a high level. Nice start.

Ernst was so close to saving one of Vasquez’s runs. He entered the game with first-and-third, nobody out. With two outs, a balk brought home a run.

The path to MLB is much clearer when you are a LHP. The Yankees aren’t loaded with relief options from the left side at the upper minors (unless you want to throw Ken Waldichuk into the mix, which they won’t for now). We’ll see what kind of season Minnick can put up.

Hudson Valley Renegades (4-5) (Lost to Rome, 7-3)

CF Everson Pereira: 2-for-5, 2 RS, SB (3)
Third consecutive multi-hit game (5th overall in eight games). He is up to .394 (13-for-33, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 12 R, 7 BB, 10 K, 3-for-4 SB). Incredible start.
C Austin Wells: 3-for-4, BB, K
This was a much-needed effort. Wells is now 7-for-31 (.226) with a pair of doubles and six walks. He has 11 strikeouts.
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-4, 2B (5), RBI, BB
He is hanging on to that over .400 number (.412; 14-for-34, 5 doubles, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 5 R, 6 BB, 8 K). Once the Yankees are convinced this is too easy for him, they’ll move him. That isn’t necessarily now.

Hopefully he figures out a consistent approach but its been 3? yrs now that he's struggled to make consistent contact. Well see what happens. It would be great if he could get it figured out by next yr and take over for Gallo.

True about Lockbridge but he did have over 20 SBs in 19 and then 18 last year. So he's not a burner but he can clearly run.

Florial definitely has the best tools of the bunch. But in baseball IMO the hit tool is one you must have to succeed. He doesn't seem to have it yet

You're right, what i meant is other than his speed he doesn't have a tool that jumps out at you and says thats special. He could have a very solid career, but i think at this point he's probably more of a 4th/5th OFer type.

With Flo and Lockridge at their ages, thing have to go right for them to have good MLB careers. Pereira is still young and is putting it all together now.

We all know they dont have the marbles. Now unless half the rotation goes down at the same time I can see it. Or if we are completely out of it come July maybe. But guys like Devi, Gil and Schmidt who are already on the 40 man will get the first shots.

Legit there is no room for him in AAA, especially when Schmidt gets sent down. Krook is off to a hell of a start in AAA and Devi, Gil, Wesneski are all going to stay in that AAA rotation.

IMO Waldi could make the jump from AA to the MLB if needed, like Monty did, but there is just so much starting pitching depth they don't need him to. I think they'll leave him in AA for now so he can put up stupid numbers and gain more value

I keep hearing very positive thing about Krook who is another LHer. The pitching in the system really is unbelievable with talent and depth

agreed, I think that 40 man spot will prevent them from putting Waldi and Weseneski on the MLB roster this yr, unless they force the issue. Then again, neither have given up an ER yet this yr, so maybe they are already starting to force the issue

According to Hugh McKenna, Trey Sweeney has been placed on the 7-day injured list due to “lower half tightness.” Hopefully, it won’t be a long-term injury and he can return soon. Sweeney is off to a .250/.333/.531 (120 wRC+) start for High-A Hudson Valley over 36 plate appearances.



The Yankees have signed Derek Dietrich to a minor league contract.

Dietrich played in the Yankees’ organization last season, hitting .215/.413/.393 in 143 plate appearances for Triple-A Scranton. He opted out of his deal, landing in Washington. As a member of the Nationals’ Triple-A Rochester squad, he hit .121/.270/.212 over 159 plate appearances. I guess if you look at if from a perspective that, you cannot have expansion, without contraction, it's not a shock.

It may be a slow years the minors with guys getting hot later in the season.

With the Yankees’ MLB squad struggling to hit, you may be wondering if anyone in the minors can help. The answer is not at this time. That doesn’t mean Oswald Peraza, Oswaldo Cabrera, or Estevan Florial will remain down in the minors all season. It does mean that none of them are performing at their best at the moment. You aren’t going to make a change to a youngster just for the sake of it. Complicating things is this: Who exactly are they replacing? Peraza is a shortstop. While Isiah Kiner-Falefa isn’t a brand name, he is playing fairly well at the big league level. Cabrera is a utility player, who could replace Marwin Gonzalez. However, Marwin barely plays so what is Cabrera going to do? Florial may have a clear path as you can easily swap him in for Tim Locastro. However, what is the point of that? What are we accomplishing by using kids who aren’t playing at their best in the minors right now? This can change in a month or two, certainly. For now, there isn’t meaningful help coming. This is on the current MLB roster to figure things out.

The Yankees have signed UTIL Kaleb Cowart to a minor league contract. Cowart hasn’t played in a game (majors or minors) since the 2019 season. Over five years with the Angels, he hit .176/.238/.292 in 406 plate appearances. As you would suspect with someone with that offensive profile, he can play multiple positions. He is here as a depth piece…or, maybe, as the Yankees’ best offensive option.

.216/.356/.297 in 45 PA. He draws his walks (7) but has 16 strikeouts this year. Typically, over his career, strikeouts haven’t been much of an issue so hopefully, it is a small sample size blip.

His average finally falls below .400 (.375). As long as he can keep the OPS above 1.100, we are good (I am kidding)
