Yea its pretty early to say that.
You keep semien if they are in it. Trade him if we are not. I wouldnt sign him in the offseason though.
I've watch two moths of the season. They were outplayed in every facet of the game by Tampa. They have to pass Boston, New York, and Tampa in the division. They are already 5 1/2 games back in the wildcard. Even if they do squeak in they will not win the WS. It is better for the long term future of the team to deal Siemen unless he is staying long term.
I think you keep Semien either way. Let Biggio, Groshans and Martin fight for 3B and lock Semien up. The guy is finishing off the best offensive month in franchise history with an OPS of 1.125 in May. (Well I consider the highest OPS month the best offensive month, but that part is obviously debatable...). He is slashing .359/.416/.709 in May after his slow start. The only thing he hasn't hit is left handed pitching. Him and Vladdy both hit RHP a lot better than they hit LHP.
If you can lock him up, definitely keep him. I agree. Let the others fight it out at third and deal the surplus for needs elsewhere. But if he's not staying he should be dealt no matter what. If this team is to have an extended run, I would rather have the three or four specs he could fetch at the TDL than letting him walk at the end of the season for nothing (although I would throw a QO in there to get the draft pick at least but I can't see the TDL haul for him being less or on par with that). I don't want a short competitive window. Dealing him extends that window and/or provides more flexibility moving forward. Locking him up or trading him benefits the rebuild and the future. Keeping him and letting him walk at season's end only means there is one more hole to fill moving forward.
Depends on the deadline. If they add a Torp and we have another rookie emerge like manoah... never know. We could make the playoffs.
I don’t need the playoffs this year for this season to be a success though. I needed the young guys to emerge, and some type of assessment of what we have coming up. Might be best long term to miss the playoffs and cash in on seimen (possibly even Ryu if the return is MLB ready) Make some space for Martin and groshans after the TDL to see what they can do, and spend that 20mil (or 40mil) on pitching for next season.
The most important part of this teams future success is doing even better than we hoped. Vlad.
We are being to quick to anoint Manoah. He has only 6.0 innings of MLB experience. Pearson had almost the same line in his first MLB start last year against Washington and what happened afterwards? I'm not saying Manoah will, but there is game footage of him now and you know that it is being studied. Heck, Halladay went five strong in his debut and almost had a no-no in his second game before he had to return to the minors with a 10.48 ERA for a complete rebuild of his delivery. So a lot of moving parts need to fall in to place this year.
A TORP at the TDL will be costly. I'd rather keep the specs and sign a TORP in the offseason. The money is there apparently. It's not 92 and David Cone completes the rotation. You've got Ryu who is good but an injury risk, Ray and Matz who are streaky, Manoah who is very unproven, and the fifth spot is wide open (although not needed in the playoffs). That is too many question marks to justify dumping specs right now.
I'd rather see continued player development and holding onto the future with no playoffs or another brush with them and seeing an early exit knowing that the future looks good and is secure. We have a long way to go to pass Tampa and the Yankees (who I think are about to catch fire). Signing Semien long term or if that is not possible, dealing him accomplishes the futures goal. Holding onto him for another playoff sniff does not. As long at Shatkins doesn't see potential in players like McKinney and Drury again we could do very well for Semien.
So much for the no hitter that Ryu was supposed to throw today
Top 3 are combined 1 for 8 and they’ve scored 8 runs.
