The crowd around the barricade all but evaporated once they reached the "find out" stage of "**** around and find out." You notice that didn't happen anywhere else in the Capitol during this. As far as the officers being attacked, that is what they are trained for. That is what they are equipped for. That is their job. If they couldn't do their jobs properly, they should have never been hired.
By wading through a violent crowd. You keep forgetting that part for some reason. Instead of working from the outside in, you want them to bypass all of the people on the outside of the mob so they can get to the other side, trap themselves, and then start trying to clear it.
