After 5 Years Is Ross Atkins the 2nd Best GM in Blue Jays History?

They definitely doing something right. At least you can watch Jays every night you get home from work. A few years ago couldn't even watch them. They were bad! Jays are good team now.

Imagine they had a plan. Every new GM should have 3 or 4 years. Gave him time to work off those bad back loaded contracts left over from the Anthopoulos era. And build a top farm system. Drafting higher every draft. Add the Pearson, Groshans, Martin, Manoah types.

Couple of years there we had like 80 million in bad contracts tied up. That's salary of 4 all- stars there. Take a .400 team, at 4 all-stars they are a better than average club. Then add at a powerful farm system behind them. You are looking at something very interesting.

Signed Springer, Ryu and Semien. Semien I imagine is just a stop gap. Buying time until Martin and Groshans are ready. Next year we should be able to add 2 all-stars if he doesn't re-sign here.

This isn’t troll bait. This is an actual question i am interested to hear what others think:

Where is the line for atkins? At what point do we cut bait and give someone else an opportunity?

We definitely don’t look like contenders this season, and that’s fine. I’m not panicking at all.

But what if he shuffles the deck in the offseason and we get similar middling results? What if we are still not contenders in 2023 or 2024?

Where would you draw the line?

My opinion? The jays have always felt a little cursed, so I am giving some extra leeway. I definitely am interested to see what he can do this offseason. The leeway is found in if we are still not looking dominant next season, I would give him 1 more crack at it. But if we are still not looking like we turned the corner in 2023, I’d explore the GM market. Maybe pull shapiro away from baseball decisions and see if Epstein wants to break another curse. Or maybe even see what lacava could do - he did well in his one offseason at the helm.

Best case scenario is Atkins does something out of character and turns this thing around. I have definitely not given up on him. But he is not beyond critisizim. He isn’t Kyle Lowry lol.

Lol, he gets at least a shot to see how the whole lineup looks together. Springer hasn't even played a game yet. Given his extension, he gets at least another two full seasons.

Atkins just signed 5 year extension. Where is the line? 3-4 years would be my guess.

So similar to my guesstimate. I had 2-3 more years. That would have him running the show for like 8 years. I definitely wouldn’t want to waste anymore of my lifespan on him if no concrete results by then.

I was 4 y/o in ‘92. Really want to celebrate a World Series victory. Getting antsy lol.

He was extended so unless he completely goes off the rails and Shapiro fires him he's here until 2026.

Should get at least 3 years.

This is the bridge year anyway. 2022 (when the 3 sons would have played 3-4 years in the league) is what was probably most realistic. If they fail in 2022 then he gets to right the ship in 2023 or 2024.

Do the Jays as a group get the same pass the Raptors got? There’s been very little criticism about the Raptors this year and I think playing on the road all year has everything to do with it.

Think of how ****ed this is. These guys will not have played a home game for 2 seasons.

A good chunk of our players have never played a home game in Toronto. I don’t really know how to qualify the impact of that. Definitely an interesting variable.

I think it has more to do with the Raptors winning in 2019 more than anything.

If they never won a title I would be annoyed as would most people I think. But they get a few free passes in my books given they won the title.

Raps were rebuilding in 2020 with no championship in 2019.

Outside of anything catastrophic, Ross gets his 5 years IMO. Bo, Vlad and the young guys will be up for actual contracts towards the end of those 5 years, and you'll either be rebuilding again or going for it by then (of course unless they are extended before then)

Honestly... good point and I don’t think I’ve given it as much leverage as I probably should have. Especially with the youth on this roster. Vet MLB players should be professionals and execute whereever they are, but I can totally see the young guys feeding off the crowd. NBA is a bit different because the crowd effects the game majorly regardless. H/A splits are obvious even with the best teams.
