I was referring specifically to this series, game 2 in particular. Rather than throwing Garcia to the wolves and hoping, I would have felt a bit more confident in any of the aforementioned three. Well that’s the thing the game 2 debacle could still easily have been avoided despite not having Paxton and sevy . They had Tanaka , Monty , Garcia , Schmidt and happ to choose from to start that game , there was just no valid excuse to go with an opener so early in a series .Quote:

A stopgap SS for 2021 and then next offseason is when to strike for a high profile SS.

The Rays beat us with a $50 million payroll....no need to spend that much for this offseason.
Yankees need to trade Ursela or Voit or both. Maybe Judge and Sanchez for arms if you want to move the needle. You can place DJ at first and Andujar at third. Even move Torres to second and either get Lindor for SS or an other better defensive short stop, maybe Gregorious who was clutch when healthy and hits left handed. How about that for a shake up ? Frazier.

You missed my point entirely. If the Rays can advance with a $69M (player salary) and $75M total payroll why do the Yankees require $250M+?
I am not questioning the Rays talent. It was obvious to all Yanks were beat by superior pitching and timely hitting.
Maybe it's not a question of throwing tons of money at a problem, but rather understanding what the problem is and address it at a fundamental level. So rather than lament what could have or should have been done on the FA market, maybe it's time for a different approach. Rather than buy best available talent how about spending on in house development?
The yanks payroll is current at about 250 mill , bringing the payroll to less than 210 like hal wants would require losing some talent . And most of the talent coming off the books is pitching . So you can forget about Paxton , happ and even Tanaka coming back or atleast two of those three not coming back . If the Yankees couldn’t make it out of the alds at 250 mill could they even make it there with less talent than they have now ? Do you really think they could definitely make the playoffs with a rotation of cole , German , Garcia , Schmidt and Monty ? Don’t forget the playoffs will probably not consist of as many teams as there were this year nor will it be in the same seeding format .Quote:

4) make a legit run for Lindor. He's one of the better defensive SS in baseball which helps our defense immensely. It would add another SH, high avg, high contact, high energy bat with great speed to our lineup. We could really use more guys that can take that can make contact and take an extra base when we need it, go from 1st to home
5) I"M NOT SAYING TRADE all these guys but i definitely think its time to find out what guys like Judge, Voit, Sanchez, Miggy and Frazier are worth, i'd put Stanton in there also but the NTC would make it tough to move him. If we could get the right value for 1 or more of them i'd make the move. It never hurts to find out your players value and listen to offers. We might get a crazy offer we couldnt refuse
6) while i agree Sanchez no longer should be the starter, with as much as the organization likes him though I doubt they move him when he is at his absolutely lowest value. I think the far more likely scenario with him is they will go into spring with Higgy, or another C they acquire, will begin the yr as the starter. I could see them starting Gary in AAA to try to get him to remember how to hit. If he remembers how to hit, give him a chance to earn back playing time to get some of his value back. I have zero issue with trading Sanchez but it makes more sense to me to try and rebuild some value rather than give him away for practically nothing
Judge is the public face of the team and unless they got an incredible offer i'm not sure Hal would sign off on trading him. Again IMO if u get a big enough offer, it would have to be massive to actually move him, u have to strongly consider it
Voit has proven to be a solid, legi,t middle of the order bat, top 3 this yr in HR's and RBIs. He's got 4yrs of control left and is making less than 1m, He would be incredibly valuable to alot of teams. He would make 1 hell of a 1st piece in a trade for a TORP
7) sign Brantly. He's basically the LHed version of DJ as far as being a professional hitter. With the extremely depressed financial market i don't think there is going to be a massive market for a 34yr old LFer. Let him platoon with Frazier and having him around would be like having another hitting coach around.
8) After resigning DJ, rebuilding the whole staff has to be the top priority. Cole is everything we could have asked for. We absolutely have to get a legit #2 behind Cole. Bauer is the easiest fix but i'm not sure the Yanks will be willing to give hi the 1yr30m deal he's looking for and give up a 1st round pick. The massive conflict with him and Cole is also a concern
I would like to see them get a #3 thats better than Tanaka, in reality because of the excellent long term relationship we have with him, i fully expect them to resign him for something like 3yr36m
I would feel more than comfortable filling out the rest of the rotation with a combo of German, Monty, Devi, Schmidt and Sevy when he eventually comes back. I do think, if they don't sign Bauer, one of our top pitching specs will be traded in a package for a TORP . Good news is Sevy is supposed to be ahead of schedule and they are hopeful he can return to April
We also have a ton of elite, young arms coming so it wouldn't be a shock if one or more contributed in a big way at some point next yr.
9) we also have a loaded farm system that should allow us to trade for most anything we want if Cash is willing to part with his precious specs
10) Speaking of young pitchers, I would sign Eric Kratz as a pitching/ catching coach. His passion is working with young pitchers, especially the Latina ones. Look at how successful he was working with Devi. Former catchers make the best coaches and if a catcher can keep an MLB job till he's 40, he must have a ton of knowledge he could pass on
11) Gotta add a couple of elite arms to the pen, we need a Miller and a Kahnle type. Hader is going to cost as much as an ace so IMO there are better uses of our trade assets. The reliever market isn't bad this winter and with the market being depressed financially there will be options to upgrade the pen without having to give up the farm, IMO. Liam Hendricks is a FA again and we pursued him last yr
12) The Yanks have close to 100M coming off the books this winter but they will not exceed the 3rd luxury tax threshold because those penalties are extremely harsh. The biggest reason they won't exceed that threshold is that they already have an IFA deal worked out with Roddrick Arias, the #1 spec next yr and most evaluator consider him a generational talent on par with Dominguez. They will not loose the money to sign him by over spending in FA 0 chance
13) 1 other thing that i think alot of people are forgetting is that lower payroll teams are going to be looking to dump some of their bigger salaries because of how much money was lost this yr. Quite a few teams are crying poor already. A wealthy team like us that also has a ton of money coming off the books is in a perfect position to take on some salary of an elite player and only have to trade minimal assets. I think the Yanks are going to very busy this winter if Hal is serious about winning next yr. Cashman also has to be more aggressive than usual to take advantage of this huge buyer market IMO
