Deal isn't done yet. I would love him to go there. I keep saying this, I think he makes Cole angry and pitch better.
Bauer will talk so much smack.
If the Mets do land him, I wonder if they trade a pitcher?

Bauer has "bust" written all over him. Yes, he could be the best pitcher in baseball based on an 12 start 60 game season in which he went 5-4 (sure...I know...analysts argue that records don't matter). He wants a higher AAV than Cole's $36 million. So let's project $36.5 million for 30 starts (assuming he stays healthy, which he should), or 2.5 times last year's career year performance. Record would be 12.5 - 10, which even with a 1.73 ERA is not worth $36.5 million, unless the intangibles that he brings are worth about $20 million. If he helps the rest of the staff understand baseball analytics - great. If he becomes a distraction in the clubhouse and the media - not so great. If the media focuses on his past twitter bullying, including women, it might also be a bad thing, considering the Mets just fired their GM for aggressive behavior with a female reporter. Again, I know, if he's a superstar, it might get somewhat overlooked, but if he goes in a slump or reverts back to his career 3.9 ERA, it might not. On top of all thatch has alternate good years in 2018 and 2020. If 2021 is a bad year, oh crap.
Therefore, I hope the Mets sign him for 10 years at $50 million per year and I'll take the heat if he's another Tom Seaver.
Steven Matz seems like the most likely candidate. BUT Mets not close on Bauer based on media reports. Reportedly an "offer" was made 10 days ago, short term 2-4 yrs, no money details. If he's looking for Cole money he may need to reevaluate his ability and performance, neither justify those numbers imo. Add the baggage he brings and some teams may shy away from the potential headache.
If anyone needs to be moved it should be Sanchez. I like to judge players by the quality of their ABs. Sanchez puts up the least competitive ABs I've seen. Judge and Stanton are both good hitters who K a lot due to their size. Sanchez isn't a good hitter, he just isn't good. Also, not all contact is equal. Lindor's K% is much less than Judge's, yet they have a similar career average. Gardner has had some low K% years lately and also had low averages. Hicks had a low K% last year and hit .225 on the season. Point is, just because you make contact doesn't mean it is good contact. I'm not saying there aren't any contact guys left, I'm saying there aren't many and they are declining. You bring up Springer and that is my point, a guy like that who consistently drives the ball is not easily attainable and that is why he got big money.
Using K rate as a barometer of good contact hitters, Gardner is #2 in AL East at 12.8%. Eric Sogard leads the AL East at 9.5%.
Gardner’s bat control skill is one of the reasons he’s been able to have such a long career in New York. In fact, he’s gotten better at avoiding strikeouts, keeping his rate below 20 percent in each of the past four seasons.
ps. The best in the MLB: Twins -- Willians Astudillo, (2.6%): He has struck out only five times in his entire career.
* numbers represent full season in 2019.
looks like the Yankees just signed Darren O'Day to a 1 year deal with an option for 2022:
Quote:
12:33pm: O’Day’s contract is a one-year deal that contains both a player option and a club option, tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. (Presumably, the Yankees will have the option to pick up O’Day’s 2022 season at a set price and, if declined, he can opt into a second season at a lower rate.) He’s guaranteed a total of $2.5MM in 2021, Heyman adds.
12:22pm: The Yankees are in agreement on a contract with free-agent righty Darren O’Day, reports Lindsey Adler of The Athletic (via Twitter). O’Day, represented by the Ballengee Group, still needs to pass a physical before the deal is finalized.
The 38-year-old O’Day will add a seasoned veteran to an already formidable Yankees bullpen. Most expected O’Day to be back with the Braves in 2021, given an affordable club option on his contract, but Atlanta made the surprising decision to pay him a $500K buyout rather than pay him a $3.5MM salary in 2021. For a reliever coming off 16 1/3 innings of 1.10 ERA ball eight hits and five walks allowed against 22 strikeouts, that seemed to be an eminently reasonable price tag. Heyman adds that the Braves and Phillies finished runner-up to the Yankees in their efforts to sign O’Day.
O’Day wasn’t only strong in 2020, of course. The sidearming righty has a length track record of being a high-quality setup piece, dating all the way back to a breakout 2009 with the Rangers. He’s dealt with injuries in recent years, requiring IL stints for elbow, shoulder and hamstring injuries since 2016, but whenever he’s on the field O’Day has been effective. Since 2012, he’s only turned in three seasons with an ERA north of 3.00 — never higher than 2016’s 3.77 in that span — while putting together a composite 2.34 ERA with a 28.6 percent strikeout rate against an impressive 6.8 percent walk rate.
^^ 2.51 ERA over 604 career relief appearances in 13 MLB seasons.
Love the O'Day get. He'll should be a big upgrade on Ottavino as a RH specialist.
If indeed La Stella signs for three years, he will have earned a longer contract than we projected at the outset of free agency. La Stella was the No. 30 free agent on our board with a projected two-year, $14MM deal ahead of him – a mark he seems to have surpassed. MLBTR
