Bauer has "bust" written all over him. Yes, he could be the best pitcher in baseball based on an 12 start 60 game season in which he went 5-4 (sure...I know...analysts argue that records don't matter). He wants a higher AAV than Cole's $36 million. So let's project $36.5 million for 30 starts (assuming he stays healthy, which he should), or 2.5 times last year's career year performance. Record would be 12.5 - 10, which even with a 1.73 ERA is not worth $36.5 million, unless the intangibles that he brings are worth about $20 million. If he helps the rest of the staff understand baseball analytics - great. If he becomes a distraction in the clubhouse and the media - not so great. If the media focuses on his past twitter bullying, including women, it might also be a bad thing, considering the Mets just fired their GM for aggressive behavior with a female reporter. Again, I know, if he's a superstar, it might get somewhat overlooked, but if he goes in a slump or reverts back to his career 3.9 ERA, it might not. On top of all thatch has alternate good years in 2018 and 2020. If 2021 is a bad year, oh crap.
Therefore, I hope the Mets sign him for 10 years at $50 million per year and I'll take the heat if he's another Tom Seaver.

Steven Matz seems like the most likely candidate. BUT Mets not close on Bauer based on media reports. Reportedly an "offer" was made 10 days ago, short term 2-4 yrs, no money details. If he's looking for Cole money he may need to reevaluate his ability and performance, neither justify those numbers imo. O’Day wasn’t only strong in 2020, of course. The sidearming righty has a length track record of being a high-quality setup piece, dating all the way back to a breakout 2009 with the Rangers. He’s dealt with injuries in recent years, requiring IL stints for elbow, shoulder and hamstring injuries since 2016, but whenever he’s on the field O’Day has been effective. Since 2012, he’s only turned in three seasons with an ERA north of 3.00 — never higher than 2016’s 3.77 in that span — while putting together a composite 2.34 ERA with a 28.6 percent strikeout rate against an impressive 6.8 percent walk rate.
