This is 100% spot on. Its not about where he fits in baseball wise. Its about who is spending money. The only teams that seem to be adding payroll are Mets, Blue Jays, Padres, White Sox, Angels. All for various reasons.

1. Mets seem to be done to me. Maybe they will add a bullpen arm.
2. SD seems done too
3. White Sox will probably only look to add a bullpen
4. Blue Jays primary concern is OF so I'm guessing Springer goes there. That pretty much takes them out of an overpay for DJ.
5. Angels will be the big player for Bauer IMO.
6. Red Sox are re-building so he makes no sense for them at his age
7. Dodgers are an interesting spot, but my guess is that there offer will be similar to the Yankees or higher dollars per year for 2 years.

There have been lots of reports that were DJ's first option,. He became a superstar here, why would he want to leave? IMO he and his agency have miss read the market pretty severely. Its also BS that they are blaming Stantons contract on not being able to do anything. They are only paying him 22.5m AAV which is pretty cheap for a player of his talent level. IF, big if he can stay healthy that isn't to much to be paying him. We have Cole at 36mAAV and Stanton at 22.5 AAV as our only big contracts. For a team that prints money having a little under 60m AAV shouldn't prevent them from taking advantage of this market. They should be trying to take advantage of the cheap talent, especially BP arms

This year is a cluster----, so even though I believe they should spend because there are good deals out there, I'll give them a pass.

My real problem with the front office is that they never went "all in" with this nucleus after 2017 and did not address the real need, which has always been starting pitching. They've been pinching pennies, hoarding prospects and focusing all their efforts on dumpster diving.

Look at the Padres and White Sox. Out doing deals to capitalize on their window to win. I mean seriously, the Padres landed Clevinger, Darvish and Snell in trades within the last 12 months and still have 9 of the top 100 prospects in baseball. Look at the Dodgers, landed Betts without giving up Ruiz, May or Lux. All substantial moves.

Where are you getting that the dodgers are only going with 2 years for dj?? That’s as far as they are going with Justin turner , and he is 36 so that makes sense .

You give them a pass this off season but still complain that they haven’t gone all in since 17 . That makes no sense at all . If This off season is a buyers market like some say it is then there is no excuse for the yanks to not take advantage of it since they have 30 mill or so to spend and have plenty of trade chips hoarded away in the minors to make good trades . If anything they shouldn’t get a pass at all for doing nothing until now , especially with the pennant up for grabs . This off season is the perfect time to go all in since so many teams aren’t. This is an off season for a team like the yanks to go all in without having to actually overspend at all .

I thought you meant the Yankees , my bad . But After what the Indians , Cubs and rays got for their players I don’t think you can truly say anyone doesn’t have the pieces to get Castillo and also call this market a buyers market

I would think if he were that gettable they would have moved him by now. I really think that they would rather move Gray first. If San diego couldn't come up with a suitable package to their asking price for Castillio with 9 top 100 specs the asking price has to be through the roof. They were rumored to be asking for 1 of SD top 2 specs, both top 10 overall, 2 more of their top ten and a couple lottery tickets. Thats a huge ask even for Castillio

I was told the wanted Frazier, Dominguez, and one of our top 5 pitching specs plus, plus... with what everyone else paid for pitching so far i wouldn't part with Dominguez, and 1 of Gil/ Medina/Devy/ Schmidt and plus plus.. i certainly wouldn't add Frazier

Well some of those prize prospects are gonna have to be traded within the next year or so since there won’t be room on the 40 man for all of them . Cant keep hoarding them, and that includes some of the prized ones .

As mentioned on @MLBNetwork the Yankees will go 4 years for DJ LeMahieu. There’s still a $ gap, however; it appears there’s still a standoff with all the very top free agents. Dodgers, Jays, Mets among others interested but it’ll still be a surprise if DJ leaves.

I don't disagree that its absolutely the right time to deal some of the specs. I just don't think they trade Dominguez and i would be extremely reluctant to give up either Gil or Medina.. When your always looking for starting pitching every yr and you finally have 2 guys that could fix that problem for the next 10yrs and they're less than a season away it would need to be one hell of a return to trade them IMO. Those 2 aren't lottery tickets anymore, they are legit specs who have the stuff to put up healthy Sevy numbers with a higher ceiling. We are going to have to develop our own starters if were every going to stop this yearly scavenger hunt for starting pitching. When your starting pitching desperate like we are and you have 2 guys with ace ceilings knocking on the door I think you take the risk and keep them. Hopefully Blake, with help from Briend, can develop TORP for us like he did in Cleveland.

They hired Briend and Blake specifically because of their success developing young pitchers, this is the first yr we might see some very positive results.

Anyone else on the farm i wouldn't hesitate to trade in the deal that would impact the roster

I'm really starting to wonder if thats a good thing long term or not. I can easily envision them signing DJ and they completely pass on the elite SS market next yr. Long term i think Torres is much better off at 2nd base

All depends upon strategy, which isn't so consistent or clear.

* If you are trying to win with this core, you sign DJ and you move the specs for Castillo (I'm still not convinced he's really available). You also don't worry about the cap.

* If you are looking towards guys like Medina, Gil and Dominguez creating a new core, you pass on DJ. Sell everyone for prospects except Cole, Torres, Frazier, Gio and Stanton and do a reboot. With the money save, you buy a SS if a Lindor or comparable SS is available next year and do a quick reboot. This assumes Medina/Gil/Schmidt are available in 2022/2023 and Dominguez shortly thereafter in 2024.

Buying Cole suggests A. Passing on Lindor and starting pitching alternatives to roll with a young unproven rotation suggests B. Your guess is as good as mine.

If the Yankees sign DJ, there is no chance they go after any of these star SS next year in FA. Maybe that's why they are holding their ground. Baez, Story, Seager, Correa and Lindor are all FA next offseason. The Mets barring something catastrophic are going to re-sign Lindor. They don't make that trade otherwise. Cohen said they want to be the Dodgers of the East Coast so I wouldn't expect them to blow by the luxury tax every offseason. They will scale back spending, build their farm system, be in on major FA when they want to be.

The Yankees have a ton of talent to make moves. Major league talent too. You can pick one between Urshela and Andujar and get something of value back for one of them in return. Voit plays a position where you could sell high on him to fix an area of need. I know he was great last year but offensive 1st baseman you can find relatively cheaply. They also have a really good crop of prospects they could trade for ML talent. There are options there besides FA.

If they are gonna start a new core then trade as much as the current core that they have . And starting a core with multiple pitching prospects is a very big gamble since they are not proven and it is very very rare for multiple starting pitching prospects to pan out at the same time . Look what happened the last two times the Yankees tried to start a core with pitching prospects , it failed . Or did you forget joba , Kennedy and Hughes and then the killer b’s ? I think it’s dumb to hoard away so many pitching prospects and gamble the long term future on them . It didn’t work 15 years ago and it didn’t work 10 years ago .
