Those are articles written in august or earlier of 2019 as I said earlier and they were saying he COULD be in cy young contention. Nowhere do they say he was for sure In cy young contention in fact he never was once the season ended . He was not on the list of contenders just a few months later after 3 of those 4 articles were written. . So in the end he was never truly in cy young contention , those articles were simply opinions of people who thought he COULD be . There is a big difference between being in contention for something and possibly being in contention . Especially if it’s said long before the season ends.
Unless German is continuing to engage in domestic violence, I think we should accept that he served his time and it's time to put the past in the past and let him concentrate on baseball.
Agree!
i think they're more worried about his tweet than they are about any future domestic abuse cases. Either way if he has an identical season or better than his rookie year trade him immediately. I would find it incredibly hard to believe we couldn't get a huge haul for him.
100%
My concern is not with that issue. He was disciplined for the situation and it was severe. My issue is his brain.
I throw this out to Doc as well, based on his behavior via social media, I have to wonder if he's bipolar and untreated. He makes these dramatic posts that reek of doom and then a couple days later, retracts and says, all is sunny.
If he gets his head on straight, I think his basement is a solid mid rotation guy.
If you watch German on the mound, you'd never believe he has any outside issues. Perhaps, it is on the mound that he finds his inner sanctum. Plus, as his floor, he could be a great long man. On the mound, his calmnest reminds me of Ramiro Mendoza, who was an integral part of Yankees Championships in the distant past. Ramiro was the long man and he could hold the opposition to no runs or one run for multiple innings, while the Yankees bats came back, often picking up the middle innings wins.
I see a different person on the mound than you. I see a pitcher who is always on the edge. He teeters on trouble and collapse and squeaks out of it. As good as his record was and as good as his stuff was, I never felt safe with him pitching because I never thought he was in control
Strangely, your inner sanctum and my ledge can be very similar places. The mound is where he can battle for control.
He was 18-4 and went about his business in a professional manner. Was it inner Sanctum or living on the edge? To me 10-12 more likely might prove living on the edge.
i do not expect german to do much even if he gets a start or 2 he missed a whole year plus the cloud of his woman beating hands over him
And you are overrating him . This is the same guy who only has one season under his belt as a full time starter and even then he had to be moved to the bullpen in the last month . And yet you are talking about him like he is some kind of great pitcher who would be very hard to replace .
He did get good run support . Half his wins came when the yanks scored atleast 5 runs and his era in those games was 5. And on top of that only 135 of those 143 innings pitched were as a starter . He was moved to the bullpen in the last month of the season because of his second half struggles. Domingo German is a classic example as to why win/loss records for starting pitchers have lost relevance over the years
How so? all i am expecting him to be is a middle of the rotation starter or middle innings BP arm and 1 of our 14 best pitchers. I have a whole lot more faith in German than Cessa Or Lasagna as this point
If there are better option after ST gets going then trade him. IMO he is going to provide value with his versatility and cheap cost.
God forbid Cole gets hurt or Kluber, Taillon and Sexy cant stay healthy. What if Monty, Garcia, Schmidt struggle? were just not in a position with how the rest of the pitching staff is built to just throw away a guy like German who can be a very effective starter or reliver.
When did German prove how versatile he is ? The one year he spent as both a starter and a reliever was in 2018 and he had a losing record with close to a 6 era . And if all three of those pitchers struggle then the Yankees are in trouble since German is likely not much better than them . You can have the deepest staff in baseball but if it is mostly mediocre to possibly average pitchers , how good is it really? Again with how little he is paid he isn’t as difficult to replace as you think he is . So yes you are overrating him .
Ahh . This where I should have been clearer. When Living on the edge, your outcome is often influenced by your support system. I agree that he had a fantastic season. I think a there were a few games where he had 6-7 games where he pitched just 5, gave up 3 or more and either won or got seriously bailed out. Like 7 and 8 runs and the offense tied the game.
Change those 7 and we have the ferocity to which you referred.
Again, not a knock on his talent. I just saw a guy who got into trouble and either wiggled out, which is great or got some help, which is also great. But if the help isn't there, he has a different season
Keep eye on this Yankees dark horse bullpen candidate
TAMPA — Yankees relief prospect Addison Russ just wants a shot.
“I just want them to see that I can compete, that I’m willing to put the work in,” Russ told NJ Advance Media in a phone interview recently.
***
Russ pairs a mid-90s fastball with a mid-80s, late-breaking splitter. The Texas native throws them from essentially the same release point, baffling hitters who can’t tell what’s coming. In three minor-league seasons, he’s averaged 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings. In 2019, Russ had a 2.54 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings at Double-A Redding.
While at the Yankees’ alternate site last year, the team also worked with him to develop a slider, which acts similarly to a cutter, Russ said.

“I’ll do anything I can to finish with the team and eat up innings or be in any role they need me in,” he said.

Literally anyone at spring training COULD be more deserving. Guess we’ll see what the actual experts think. I think distractions are overrated. Sure it would be great to only work with people you like, but that’s just not how the world works. If German is the best man for the job, pitch away. He served his time in the eyes of the law/mlb and that’s good enough for me.

So weird that German is such a huge issue even thought everything took place like two years ago yet Chapman was never an issue.
I think there is a difference because one was actually a Yankee at time of incident, one was not.
One actually also took place at an event where Yankees players and front office members were attending and apparently a Yankees teammate and his wife went to Germans house to calm him down because his S/O was scared to the point she locked herself in a room at their house.
So I do believe it is more personal for some.
I also think there is more to it than just that, maybe it's the way German had handled it within the lockerroom.

I badly wanted Chapman to opt out 2 years ago and wanted the Yankees to dump German 2 years ago as soon as he was suspended . The reason why I never complained as much about Chapman before 2 years ago is because the Yankees were stuck with him after giving him that big contract . I have never been a fan of Chapman despite how good he was . The reason why German is still a big issue now even though it’s two years later is because he is still a damned headache and because it is his first season back in the mlb since that happened .
