Cashman did try to upgrade the rotation after the 18 season. He got Paxton who was coming off his best season and he re signed Happ who was very good for us down the stretch after we traded for him. Neither worked out well but he did attempt to upgrade the rotation this yr
Happ was not an upgrade at his age and neither was paxton considering his injury history . I want the he yanks to move on from dj and go with the one year stop gap . Then they have the money to actually do something about the rotation . I think they just sign dj abs not do much moreQuote:

other than Bauer, who they can't afford based on his asking price and even if they could afford it isn't worth anywhere close to what he is asking for, who would u go get now? what TORP are there left to get that improves this team more than bring DJ back not only next yr but in the future also.
Other than Bauer their isn't a FA pitcher on the market that would make DJ + whoever, say Kluber, better next yr than what Carassco/ Lindor will. I would be shocked if they could come anywhere close to matching the value Carassco/Lindor will provide next yr for similar money
Gray and Castillio are technically available but they aren't bring Gray back period. Castillio would be perfect but they want to be absolutely blown away to even think about moving him. If Cash didn't/ wouldn't step up to make that deal today i have a very difficult time seeing Cashman blowing Cincy away for Castillio.
Do u really think not re signing DJ, going with a stop gap SS and signing Tanaka and Kluber makes them a better team? Its easy to say they need to go and get a #2  but actually getting it done is another

One thing, I don't know is how the luxury tax works for a shortened season. Whether you believe it or not, they claim to have lost more money than any team in baseball. So maybe with even greater pending losses forthcoming for the current season, they will indeed tow the line at $210 million. So,let's take $265 million and subtract $89 million and add back $10 million for arbitration raises and we are at $186 million, leaving us $24 million to get to $210 million. If we go to the next level of luxury tax, we would be at (I'm unsure) $230 million, so we have $24 million (DJ only) for the 1st level and $44 million (?) for the second level.
Business people don't typically take on increased fixed costs when revenues dry up. They do the minimum to achieve their goals.
As for acquiring a shortstop next year that could be their plan. They've done it before and fans have had to wait one year for the big spending year that follows. If they have their eyes on one of Seager, Lindor or Story for a 10 year $30 million contract, so be it. Perhaps Carrasco's 3 year deal messes up that spending deal for next year or messes up their willingness to trade for Lindor and sign him immediately for close to $30 million knowing that they would have to pay Carrasco $13 million on top of that for a total of $43 million. DJ for $22 million, Tanaka for $10 million, another pitcher (Paxton) for $8 million and Gardner for $3 million, could possibly be re-signed for that money and you don't have to give up Frazier, Andujar and pitching specs.
It's been a good season for manure farmers. THey are wiggling and wallowing in so much of it, they have nowhere to put it.
