Can I ask you what you base that on? Sevy hasn’t pitched in 2 years and German isn’t doing well against AAA type batters in the Dominican league . Now if you said sevy will have an impact in the second half I can agree with that but I just find it hard to believe that German is really going to have such a great impact in the first half that him and sevy combined will be better than Bauer . While I do agree Bauer isn’t worth Bauer type money I find it very hard to believe that he would be such a headache that he isn’t worth going after . I mean you have no problem with the headache wife beater German being the yanks #2 starter and all . And you don’t get much bigger of a headache than a wife beater

They actually do need a SS and while there are some top level SS going to be available but if you look closer only 2 are really fits for the Yanks. Bauer has not proven outside of 1 season and an 11 games last yr, he deserves anywhere close to that kind of money. Just because he's the best available FA starter doesn't mean he's the best fit for the Yanks. If Bauer return to his avg season of being about a 2 WAR player, we stuck paying him 30-35m till his late 30's. If the Yanks pay someone that kind of money i would like a bit more of a proven track record before taking on that kind of massive risk, so it doesn't make alot more sense to sign Bauer. If were lucky Bauer would pitch 200 innings each yr, which he has only done once in his career which is another reason he isn't worth that much money, where Lindor has averaged 150 games a yr. A position player effect far more games than a pitcher

Why worry about replacing Chapman and Britton now? When we needed BP arms they went out and got them. If all the arms in the system that have such high ceilings can't fill roles in the BP as they start to come up, then i'm sure they will go out and trade or sign what they need just like they did with Chapman, Britton, Kahnle, Drob, Miller ect.

Your seriously worried about replacing Sanchez? according to you he should have been gone already. He has alot to prove before i'd worry about losing or extending him. As far as a replacement, we have drafted 3 catchers in the 1st or 2nd round the last couple of drafts and signed the top IFA catcher available 2 other yrs.

No one know what to do about Judge at this point. They need those 2yrs to find out if he can stay healthy. If he can't play more than a 110 games a yr he isn't going to be worth the kind of contract that he is going to command.

Another advantage to Lindor is he has all the tools, talent and personality to become the face of this franchise if Judge doesn't workout.

If your so confident in your ability to put together a better team than me why won't you take me up on our little bet?

Funny you have no problem thinking German will be the Yankees #2 starter based on just one season but don’t offer the same level of confidence in Bauer in one season as well especially when he had a very similar year in 2017 to the year that German did in 2019 too . That just doesn’t jive with me

Well....Sevy is expected back in June. Early in season. All reports have him progressing well. German....can't read too much into an early winter ball performance. I expect he's getting rid of the rust, recall he hasn't faced live batters in quite some time.

In addition. In a very simplistic, reductionist manner: In 2019 German posted a 2.1 WAR. In 2017 -18 Sevy posted a 5.4 and 4.1 WAR. Except for the one outlier (2018 5.8) Bauer is at or below 2 WAR. In fact there are several negative WAR seasons on his resume'.

Germans' issues are to be taken seriously, however they are personal issues and demons he will need to resolve. Bauers issues effect the clubhouse and team directly. His friction with Cole can't be underestimated. His BIG mouth and propensity to shoot from the lip is, imo, an unwelcome distraction. Too often the focus is on ME with Bauer rather than the team. This team doesn't need Sevy to be good until late in the season. If he could round into form late in the season then that would be fantastic. The regular season isn't going to be a problem. It isn't like this team is a fringe playoff team. The lineup will mash and carry them through the regular season.

No matter which way you spin it , you are basing everything on just one season . Bauer has had to good seasons plus this past season . Again I won’t deny how good sevy can be but German hasn’t proven anything yet and still has a lot to prove before anyone can say how big of an impact he can or will be , especially this coming season

How many "great" seasons on Bauer resume' ? I'll take my chances with Sevy and German. Would I love rotation help, no question, just not Bauer and his exorbitant price tag for average career performance. He is just barely a .500 career pitcher.

I would say a career era of 3.90 with over 1100 innings pitched and having pitched over 200 innings twice makes him better than average . And better than german’s one good year with only 143 innings pitched . And numbers don’t lie but they can be misleading .

About 2 paragraphs down it explains why his numbers from 2019 should not make someone think he is a sure thing in the rotation for 2021. In fact it even goes further and states that it may not be a good idea to have German pitch the second game in a playoff series .

Agree. I also think Garcia, after his baptism by fire in playoffs, could impress. Still wonder about his durability over the longer haul.

Actually Jorge Bauer pitched 200+ innings once. In fairness shouldn't you be comparing Bauer to Sevy rather than the rook? In my comparison German was gravy, Sevy the potato.

You are the one comparing Bauer to the rook since you said or atleast implied that the rook and sevy combined would be better than Bauer . And did you read the article I posted the link to ? It explains why german’s era and wins numbers in 2019 are misleading and why as of right now and going into the 2021 season he shouldn’t be considered better than a #4 starter at best .

Yes I did read the article. I disagree. It's the authors opinion, as I've told you many times....opinions are like azzholes we all have one. He chose to interpret certain stats in a very specific manner. He did mention it could have been fatigue that effected his latter season performance.

I would be ok with German as the #4, although I think he is better.

I suggested in a very simplistic, reductionist manner, using WAR alone, the combined value of Sevy and German was far greater than Bauer AND much cheaper without all the baggage.

The writer used more than just one stat to back up his opinion plus charts and graphs showing his pitching locations . And yes he did say fatigue could have been a factor for his struggles that season but he also said that it will be a factor for this coming season as well and is yet another reason why he shouldn’t be expected to be better than a #4 starter going into 2021 . Meanwhile you are basing your opinion one just one stat alone . That is hardly enough to assume he will a big factor in the upcoming season . Let alone to believe he will be better than Bauer this coming season

It appears Luis Castillo from the Reds is made available by the Reds in a trade. I rather go after him and have an actual #2 starter (he won't hit FA until 2024 and is arbitration eligible next year), dude is a stud at 28 years old.

I don't know what kind of package would land him but if I'm Cashman I would look hard at him. Especially with the logjam of bats we have in the outfield and some prospects with no real shot at the 2021 rotation and with a big ? involving having a minors season in this pandemic.

The guy who says what he says about the NL and AL, wants to sign a guy who has had limited success in the NL(mostly in the weak central division), and thinks he is exactly what the Yankees need.

A guy who our current staff ace and one of the best pitchers in baseball has reported issues with.

Such an odd argument. It basically goes against everything else he fights about.

Not surprised given said poster though.

I agree doc. Half a season from Sevy and German(especially at their salaries) is a much better and probably more successful scenario, compared to Bauer.

I don’t know if he is worth a lot but he is worth taking a serious look at and taking a run for that’s for sure . I certainly would try to trade for him

Bauer isn't anywhere close to being in Coles. Degrom, Scherzers leagues, those are the kind of pitchers you give massive long term contract to, not a guy that had 1 great yr and was really good in just 11 starts last yr. He may be the best pitcher on the FA market but that doesn't mean he's worth 30-35m a yr for 7yrs plus. Also lets not forget he put up "big" numbers last yr in the NL Central, as you pointed out the easiest division to pitch in in baseball. He also as spent the majority of his career in the AL Central which u also pointed out as another one of the easiest divisions to pitch in and you have no concern that his performance won't drop off going to a one of the toughest divisions? Speaking of bad long term planning you really think its wise to commit 65-70 m a yr for 2 pitchers into their late 30s is the best use of that kind of money? Those 2 contract could become albatrosses in the later yrs.

If your going to be handing out massive contracts its usually the better move both in the short and long term to give them to elite players that will influence more than 35 games a yr and the younger the better. I think there are far better uses of that kind of money than Bauer

I don't see any way Bauer lands a $245MM+ deal. He might get 2-3 years at $35MM per but no way he gets a 7-8 year deal at that high of a rate.

I haven't seen anyone suggest him getting more than 30 per and I haven't seen that in a while. Then again, I haven't been looking.

Agreed. Bauer can be great but is not in the same class as Cole at the time Cole hit free agency.

I agree with you . I see him getting 25 mill or so per year . The only team I could see possibly giving him more than that is the mets since they seem to be throwing money around right now . No other team seems to be willing to spend really big money on anyone this off season . I haven’t seen anywhere that he is seeking 7 years or more , only that he wants big money .

IMO:

1. Bauer won't get near Cole money

2. I might view Bauer differently than you. He's about where Cole was when he left Pittsburgh. He's going to be a beast for the next few years for whoever signs him. That won't be the Yankees under current budget constraints.

3. You are putting way too much faith in Sevy and German. After being away from the MLB, we have no way of knowing whether they will make their way back and they will be even close to where they were. In 2020, we may get a snapshot of whether they can be relied on in 2021. This is not the type of risk a big market team that just signed Cole take during its window.

You have more faith and confidence in Bauer than I do. He may not get Cole money, but that will not preclude him from asking. Negotiations would be difficult. He would be difficult. Why bring the possibility of distraction into the clubhouse?

He is the best available arm. No question. What I do question is the fit.

Are you certain with any degree of confidence Sevy (by mid season) and German won't be contributors? There combined ability could far out weigh Bauers....with less baggage, and a drastically lower cost.

That said the recent Castillo chatter is intriguing.
